Bangladesh National Found Dead in Yumbe Guest House

Uganda Police say detectives are investigating the death of a Bangladeshi man found in a Yumbe guest house after a woman reportedly visited his room.
A Bangladeshi national was found dead in a guest house in Yumbe town, setting off a homicide-led investigation by Misryoum.
Police detectives are investigating the death of Islam Poni, 54, after his body was discovered at a hotel in Yumbe, according to Misryoum. The incident was reported to have occurred on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at around 7:00 am.
Misryoum reports that Poni was working with WKK company limited, a sub-contractor involved in tarmacking the 11.54km Yumbe-Jure road, funded by the Japanese Government.
At Yumbe Central Police Station, a case of sudden death was opened under reference YUMBE REF 002/202602/05/2026, Misryoum said, as preliminary steps began at the scene.
In the account shared through Misryoum, Poni booked a room on Friday around 4:00 pm and later had an unidentified woman join him in the room. Hotel CCTV footage, as described, indicates the woman left before 6:00 pm, leaving him alone.
By morning, Misryoum says, staff noticed continuous unanswered phone ringing from the room, prompting hotel workers to escalate the concern internally.
This case matters because hotel check-ins and visitor timing are often central to understanding what happened during the hours leading up to a death.
Misryoum adds that a team of senior hotel managers responded to the report and found Poni lifeless on the bed. Police then visited the scene, examined and documented it, and statements were recorded while exhibits were recovered and secured.
A body examination form PF48A was issued for assessment at Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital, Misryoum reported, to determine the cause of death. No arrests have been made so far.
Hotel proprietor Robert Asega told Misryoum that Poni initially declined to document his details at the booking office, saying he planned to register after taking a shower because he believed his stay would be brief.. Asega also said that shortly after, the man invited a female visitor to the room, and staff did not intervene because the customer had already paid for the full night.
Misryoum notes that it remains unclear whether Poni died while the woman was still in the room or after she had left.
This investigation will likely hinge on the timeline and the recovered evidence, since the gap between the visitor leaving and the staff discovering the body may hold key answers.
