Apple Keeps Key Specifications Secret for Under-Display Camera on New iPhone Duo
Apple has omitted specific pixel counts for the under-display FaceTime camera on its new iPhone Duo device, leaving technical observers to deduce its capabilities from surrounding specifications and video limits. According to published technical data, the device features a 12-megapixel front-facing camera on its outer screen alongside a dual 48-megapixel rear camera system. However, the company has declined to provide precise sensor metrics for the internal camera hidden beneath the display panel.
Despite the lack of a formal megapixel figure, Apple has detailed several functional features for the internal sensor. These include support for Center Stage auto-framing, an f/1.8 aperture, tap-to-zoom and rotation functions, enhanced stabilization, and 1080p video recording at 30fps or 60fps. The camera also supports FaceTime Animoji and Memoji, wide color capture for photos and Live Photos, lens correction, automatic image stabilization, QuickTake video, spatial audio with stereo recording, wind noise suppression, and Audio Mix capabilities.

A comparison with the device’s other lenses highlights performance distinctions. While the internal under-display sensor tops out at 1080p video recording at 60fps, the external front-facing camera supports up to 4K resolution at 60fps, and the rear main cameras can achieve 4K video recording at 120fps. Technical calculations indicate that a sensor capable of 1080p video requires at least two million pixels, while the absence of 4K support suggests the actual count remains below eight million pixels. Because official figures are absent, industry analysis points toward a lower-pixel configuration.
Notable design choices accompany the hardware. The under-display camera utilizes an f/1.8 aperture, which is wider than the f/2.2 aperture found on the external front camera. Hardware specialists suggest this wider opening compensates for light loss caused by light passing through the display panel, thereby increasing light intake. Real-world implications for image quality remain unverified pending comprehensive testing.
Supply chain reports dating back to late 2023 indicated that LG Innotek was developing a specialized under-display camera solution for Apple utilizing custom free-form optical lens groups designed to minimize image distortion and compensate for brightness reduction. It remains unconfirmed whether the iPhone Duo incorporates this specific supply chain technology.
Physical examinations of the device also reveal minor visual variations around the camera placement. The remainder of the inner screen incorporates a nano-texture anti-reflective treatment, whereas the area directly covering the camera appears to lack this complete finish, producing more noticeable reflections under certain lighting angles. Furthermore, due to the potential use of a lower pixel density cover layer above the sensor, the camera’s location remains visible under specific ambient lighting conditions, falling short of a completely invisible integration.
While the integration brings Apple closer to a seamless full-screen visual experience, the ultimate impact of the technology on selfies, video calls, and overall recording quality depends on forthcoming practical user experiences and professional evaluations.
