Anthony Sabatini files to seek CD 11 seat, courting Trump-era voters

Lake County Commissioner Anthony Sabatini says he filed to run for the open FL-11 seat after Dan Webster announced he will not seek re-election amid new DeSantis map debate.

Anthony Sabatini’s bid for Congress moved from “maybe” to official paperwork on Tuesday, the same day retiring U.S. Rep. Dan Webster said he would not seek another term.

Sabatini. a Republican and Lake County Commissioner. filed in Florida’s 11th Congressional District and quickly framed his candidacy around immigration enforcement. promising “ensure we deport 30 million illegals” and linking that goal to broader cultural and political “protect the American way of life” themes.. He also pointed to the timing of the qualifying window—45 days—underscoring that the district’s geography and the party’s candidate field may both shift as Republicans prepare for a post-Webster contest.

The filing comes at a sensitive moment for the state’s political calendar.. The Florida Legislature is considering a new congressional map proposed by Gov.. Ron DeSantis and released Monday, and the proposed boundaries would reshape CD 11.. Under the plan. CD 11 would include all of Sumter County. most of Lake County (with an exception at Eustis. where Sabatini previously won elected office). and much of west Orange County.. The district would no longer extend south into Polk County, while reaching farther east toward Williamsburg and Southchase.

That boundary change matters because it defines the electorate Sabatini would target—and the places where a message about immigration. policing. and “swamp” politics would need to land.. For voters. the stakes are practical even when the debate is framed in ideological language: a different set of counties and communities can shift local priorities. change the balance of suburban versus rural concerns. and influence whether candidates emphasize federal enforcement over other issues such as housing affordability. transportation. and the cost of health care.

Sabatini’s move also reflects the kind of Republican primary calculus that has become common in recent cycles.. He previously challenged Webster in the 11th District Republican primary during the last election cycle. then later dropped out after former President Donald Trump endorsed the Clermont Republican.. In this run. Sabatini is trying to reinsert himself into the race at a moment when the district lines may be in flux and when the incumbent advantage that candidates typically plan around has disappeared.

His campaign history suggests he believes his best path is to lean into conflict and attention rather than steady triangulation.. As a sitting Lake County Commissioner, he won office by unseating Republican incumbent Doug Shields.. Before that. he served in the Florida Legislature and was frequently at odds with leadership—so much so that former House Speaker Chris Sprowls reportedly moved his office to the basement level of the House Office Building in Tallahassee.. That episode. while internal to Tallahassee politics. signals a broader pattern: Sabatini has been willing to take fights that make him harder to ignore.

The party’s competitive dynamics are also sharpening.. Webster’s decision not to seek re-election leaves an open seat. and the first serious entrant is already tying his candidacy to the most volatile. high-salience issue in contemporary U.S.. politics: immigration enforcement.. Sabatini’s posts after filing—first a message referencing the new map and qualifying timeline. then a quick “Go time” follow-up—show a candidate building momentum through rapid communication. a strategy that can be particularly effective when primary voters are already sorted by party identity and media consumption.

Sabatini is no newcomer to federal politics, either.. He ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2022 in Florida’s 7th Congressional District, losing a Republican primary to now-U.S.. Rep.. Cory Mills.. In that earlier effort. and in his evolution since then. his positioning has tilted from earlier support for Donald Trump toward sharper criticism in the immigration lane. accusing Trump of softening immigration policies.

The speed of his entry is also notable given the political endorsement environment around him.. Former U.S.. Rep.. Matt Gaetz. who resigned his seat in 2024 amid a House Ethics investigation into alleged sexual misconduct. publicly cheered Sabatini’s move.. While endorsements don’t determine outcomes by themselves. they can signal which factions think a candidate fits their coalition—and they can also help a challenger raise money and name recognition faster as other prospective candidates weigh whether to jump in.

On a wider level. the race could become a proxy fight over what kind of Republican the next House member from this district should be.. Sabatini is presenting himself as a hardline enforcer aligned with the most impatient wing of the party—someone who does not wait for permission from party leadership to push his agenda.. With a newly proposed map potentially altering the district’s political math. the outcome may hinge on how well that message transfers to new voters across Sumter. Lake. and parts of Orange. and on whether the district’s new composition makes the primary more forgiving—or more punishing—for candidates who rely on confrontation as their main asset.
