Anthony Bourdain Estate Backs ‘Tony’ Biopic

Anthony Bourdain – Misryoum reports the estate supports A24’s “Tony,” saying it focuses on one transformative summer rather than a full-life retelling.

Anthony Bourdain’s estate is giving its blessing to the upcoming biopic “Tony,” positioning the film as more than a typical life story.

“Tony. ” directed by Matt Johnson and starring Dominic Sessa as a teenage Bourdain. was filmed last summer in Massachusetts. including Provincetown and the South Shore.. The movie centers on a formative summer working at a Provincetown restaurant. a period the film portrays as pivotal to how Bourdain found his footing.

Misryoum notes that biographical films often face pushback from family members when subjects are simplified or sensationalized. Here, the estate’s message emphasizes that the project is meant to capture one chapter instead of flattening an entire life.

In a statement shared with Misryoum. the estate said it supported the film because it does not attempt to summarize Bourdain from start to finish.. According to the statement. “Tony” is guided by Johnson’s vision and offers an interpretation of a single transformative summer in 1975 in Provincetown—an era the estate describes as inherently partly unknown and therefore open to storytelling.

Misryoum also points to the estate’s framing of Bourdain’s complexity, including the idea that audiences will see the beginnings of a man who eventually traveled widely and shaped how many people think about food, culture, and curiosity.

The film’s preview materials have presented “Tony” as an unsanitized look at Bourdain’s early intensity. The movie also reflects on the tensions that followed him throughout his life, with Bourdain himself having previously spoken about the severity of his struggles.

Beyond Sessa, “Tony” includes Emilia Jones as Nancy, along with Rich Sommer as Pierre and Antonio Banderas as Ciro.. Misryoum reported that additional cast members portray fellow restaurant workers and other figures tied to Bourdain’s early days. while filming took place across multiple Massachusetts locations.

“Tony” is scheduled to open in limited theaters on Aug. 7 before expanding nationwide later in August. Misryoum insight: When estates engage early and clearly, it can signal to viewers what kind of story to expect, shaping how a biopic is received long before the first reviews land.
