Elon Musk Targets Mukesh Ambani Over Starlink India Stalls

Elon Musk has publicly questioned the influence of Mukesh Ambani as SpaceX’s satellite internet service, Starlink, faces ongoing regulatory delays in India.

The standoff between Elon Musk and India’s regulatory landscape shifted from boardroom frustration to a direct personal challenge this week. After five years of attempting to bring Starlink to a market of over a billion subscribers. Musk bypassed industry decorum on Thursday. taking to social media to ask: “Is Ambani the real boss of India?”.

This pointed question, directed at Reliance Industries chairperson Mukesh Ambani, marks a significant escalation in a long-simmering dispute. The tension began Wednesday when Musk used his platform to accuse unnamed “oligarchs” of maintaining a “monopolistic chokehold” on the country to prevent Starlink’s entry. He labeled the alleged blocking a “crime against the people of India. ” arguing that his service remains the key to providing affordable. high-speed internet to the underserved.

India’s Ministry of Communications pushed back within hours. issuing a statement that described its regulatory framework for satellite communications as “fair and non-discriminatory.” The ministry clarified that Starlink is currently at the same regulatory stage as two other licensed operators. all of whom must clear security assessments before they can apply for spectrum.

Behind these exchanges lies a complex, half-decade struggle. SpaceX first attempted to launch Starlink in India in 2021. but the effort faltered in early 2022 when the government ordered the company to refund preorders for equipment it had sold before securing the necessary licenses. Since then. the company has worked to align with Indian requirements. appointing Prabhakar Jayakumar. a former Payoneer executive. to lead local operations last December. Starlink now maintains over 20 gateway sites and hundreds of ground antennas in the country.

Despite the friction, the ground is shifting. The government recently sided with Starlink’s preference for administrative spectrum allocation—a win against Reliance Jio. which had pushed for a costlier auction process. Ironically. the competitive landscape is muddled; while Jio and Bharti Airtel have historically clashed with Starlink over market access. both have also moved to distribute the service in India. Jio is simultaneously developing its own satellite broadband via a partnership with SES, while Airtel backs Eutelsat OneWeb.

At the India Mobile Congress in New Delhi this week. Starlink vice president of business operations Lauren Dreyer struck a conciliatory tone. reiterating that the company is ready to serve India and support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of universal connectivity. She noted that Starlink aims to complement, rather than replace, existing terrestrial networks.

For now, the commercial launch remains stalled. While SpaceX continues to navigate these regulatory hurdles. the company has found success elsewhere. launching its Starlink Mobile service in neighboring Bangladesh this week. Representatives for Starlink. the Ministry of Communications. Reliance Jio. and Bharti Airtel did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the current status of the standoff.
