Affluent Parents Turn Expensive Neuropsychological Evaluations Into Competitive Parenting Tools

Affluent families are increasingly turning to intensive neuropsychological evaluations—costing anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 and lasting multiple days—not to diagnose acute learning disabilities, but to secure academic advantages and understand cognitive profiles.

Traditionally, these comprehensive tests were reserved for children experiencing significant learning difficulties at home or school, helping clinicians diagnose neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. However, a growing number of self-referred parents are commissioning the multi-hour assessments as a form of recreational data gathering, hoping to obtain accommodations like extra time on high-stakes exams or specialized learning strategies.

Jessica, a mother of six in California’s Bay Area who withheld her last name for privacy, spent $8,000 on each of her children to undergo a nine-hour neuropsychological evaluation. Describing herself as a data-driven parent, she noted that the process revealed specific cognitive patterns, such as identifying one child as an auditory learner who processes verbally, and another as having facial blindness, which requires clearer verbal communication from family members.

While Jessica views the evaluations as a valuable gift that helped secure extra test time for two children diagnosed with dyslexia and one with ADHD, the trend has alarmed clinical professionals. Katie Davis, a clinical neuropsychologist in New York City, estimated that a decade ago she performed such evaluations on children without apparent needs roughly once a month. Today, she reports that approximately 40 percent of the children she tests are neurodevelopmentally normal.

Davis, author of the recently published book “Actually, You’re Fine,” which addresses childhood over-diagnosis, asserted that middle- and upper-class families are utilizing private evaluations in an attempt to propel their children to the top of competitive academic tiers. She added that some parents express frustration when evaluations fail to yield the diagnoses necessary for disability accommodations, though she maintains a strict legal threshold for recommending such services.

According to Davis, parents frequently misinterpret normal academic challenges—such as the rigorous demands of an Advanced Placement chemistry course—as indicators of conditions like ADHD. Not every student achieves straight-A marks across every subject, she emphasized, and normal academic friction does not equate to neurodivergence.

The surge in demand also mirrors broader public health trends. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that fewer than six percent of children aged three to 17 had an ADHD diagnosis in 1997, a figure that more than doubled by 2024. Meanwhile, autism prevalence estimates shifted from one in 150 children in 2000 to one in 31 children by 2022, driven by increased screening, shifting diagnostic criteria, and heightened public awareness.

Dr. Sanam Hafeez, clinical director and CEO of Comprehend The Mind, a Queens-based medical group conducting neuropsychological assessments, noted that social media exposure has heavily fueled the trend of self-referrals. While acknowledging the shift, Hafeez sees potential value in families understanding cognitive susceptibilities and learning styles, comparing the practice to routine annual blood work.

Conversely, parents of children with genuine special needs have expressed strong criticism regarding the commercialization of clinical evaluations. One mother of two sons with diagnosed learning disabilities argued that clinical evaluations are serious tools intended for children facing genuine obstacles, rather than status symbols akin to elite private schools or high-end tutoring.

Despite the controversy, parents like Jessica maintain that the comprehensive insights gained outweigh the financial cost and societal debate, viewing the detailed cognitive mapping as an essential parenting resource.
