A Rare Quiet Streak Nears Its End In Atlantic

Atlantic hurricane – As a new system brews in the Gulf, the 2024 Atlantic season inches toward an unprecedented milestone: the latest start for a hurricane on record.
The silence in the Atlantic is finally beginning to break. A low-pressure system currently churning in the western Gulf of Mexico is poised to organize into a tropical storm, and current forecast models suggest it has a significant chance of strengthening into a hurricane.
In any other year, an October hurricane would be a standard seasonal transition. But this season has been anything but typical. With October now well underway, the Atlantic has yet to produce a single hurricane. Should this system reach that threshold. it would end a historic drought that has kept meteorologists watching the satellite loops with growing curiosity.
Since the dawn of modern record-keeping—an era defined by the reliability of aircraft reconnaissance and continuous satellite imagery—there has never been an Atlantic season that failed to produce a hurricane. nor has any season gone this deep into the calendar without one. While historical logs from 1907 and 1914 show no recorded hurricanes. those gaps are widely viewed by researchers as artifacts of a time before offshore surveillance; if a storm formed over the open ocean in the early 20th century. it was likely lost to history.
The absence of storm activity this year is largely tied to the behavior of a strengthening El Niño. which has grown into a historically powerful force. El Niño generates intense wind shear across the tropical Atlantic. acting as a structural barrier that prevents storms from organizing. The result has been the quietest hurricane season on record by nearly every metric.
However, the window for these storms is shrinking. The official hurricane season spans from June 1 through November 30. but the meteorological reality is much narrower. with the vast majority of activity typically packed into the months between mid-August and mid-October. As that window begins to close. the Gulf system represents one of the few remaining opportunities for the season to snap its unusual streak.
