Manchester United Manager Michael Carrick Dismisses Need for Reassurances Amid Struggles

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has made it clear that he requires no reassurances from the club’s hierarchy regarding his position, maintaining that securing victories is the only definitive method to quell mounting speculation about his future.

United are preparing for a Champions League fixture against Italian side Como on Wednesday, entering the match having secured just two victories across 10 matches in all competitions this season. The Red Devils are currently enduring their worst start to an English top-flight campaign in 40 years. Their early-season struggles have also included an exit from the League Cup at the hands of Brighton last month, alongside a decisive defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last week.

Carrick secured the managerial post on a permanent basis in May following a strong run as interim boss during the latter half of the previous campaign. However, he has quickly found himself under intense scrutiny at Old Trafford, extending a long-running pattern of pressure at the club since the retirement of Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Speaking at a pre-match news conference in Italy, Carrick emphasized his own internal accountability. He noted that winning matches is the primary requirement for success and stability at the club.

“I know we’ve got to win football games for everything to flow and everything to fit into place. That’s the great thing about it; we can do something about it,” Carrick told reporters. He added that external guarantees are unnecessary given the realities of elite management. “I don’t need any reassurance. It’s pretty clear. I know the role, I know the responsibilities. I don’t need anyone else to kind of tell me that or tell me when it’s going well or when it needs to be better. I know that myself.”

Compounding Carrick’s managerial challenges is a mounting injury list that has heavily depleted the squad ahead of the trip to Italy. Defender Lisandro Martinez featured in the starting lineup for Sunday’s 1–1 draw against Leeds United—a match that followed his public criticism of the club’s lack of transfer activity after the loss to Atletico Madrid—but was forced off at halftime.

Martinez has been ruled out of the upcoming fixture against Como. He joins a crowded treatment room that also includes Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, Benjamin Sesko, Patrick Dorgu, and Ayden Heaven.
