French Fighter Jet Crashes in Training Flight Near Nancy, Leaving One Dead and One Missing

A French Air and Space Force fighter jet crashed during a routine training flight on Tuesday evening near the city of Nancy in eastern France, leaving at least one crew member dead and triggering an intensive search operation for a second missing aviator.

The aircraft, a two-seater Mirage 2000D belonging to Fighter Squadron 2/3 Champagne stationed at the Nancy Air Base, went down in the Rogeville commune on the outskirts of Nancy. The exact timeline of the crash remains subject to varying local reports, with some witnesses placing the incident at approximately 9:00 p.m., while others reported hearing a massive explosion and seeing a sudden fireball at around 10:30 p.m.

Colonel David Pappalardo spoke to national media regarding the tragedy, confirming that preliminary indications suggest at least one of the personnel on board was unable to eject from the aircraft before impact. The two-seater Mirage 2000D typically carries a pilot and a weapons systems officer.

Emergency services, military personnel, and local authorities immediately mobilized to secure the crash site in the Rogeville commune and launched an urgent search-and-rescue operation across the surrounding area to locate the missing crew member.

French military officials have scheduled a formal press conference for Wednesday morning to provide further updates on the ongoing recovery efforts, the status of the search, and the initial findings into the cause of the disaster.
