Swimmer Killed in Fatal Shark Attack Off South Africa’s Eastern Cape Coast

A 65-year-old woman was killed in a shark attack off the coast of South Africa on Tuesday morning, prompting municipal officials to close popular swimming areas until further notice.
The incident occurred shortly after 8 a.m. local time at Orient Beach in KuGompo City, located within the Eastern Cape province. The victim was swimming in a group when she signaled that she was in difficulty. A witness recounted to local media that fellow swimmers quickly realized she had been bitten by a shark and was in critical condition.
“The bites were very severe, but there were only two, one on her thigh and one on her upper arm,” the witness stated.
Other swimmers brought the woman back to the shore, where emergency personnel pronounced her dead on the beach. Following the incident, the victim was transferred to the State Forensic Pathology Services. Authorities withheld her identity pending formal notification of her next of kin.
In response to the fatality, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality announced the immediate closure of both Orient Beach and nearby Eastern Beach. Officials issued a public advisory urging beachgoers to exercise extreme caution and stay out of the water at the affected locations.
“Warnings are also being issued at other beaches, and members of the public are requested to remain vigilant, adhere to all safety advisories, and comply with instructions issued by the relevant authorities,” the municipality stated in a social media announcement. Officials confirmed that relevant agencies were operating at the scene to manage the aftermath of the tragedy.
Fatal shark encounters remain a rare but serious hazard along portions of the South African coastline. In a previous incident in September 2022, rescue authorities launched an operation off the southern coastline after a 39-year-old woman from Cape Town was killed in the water. Following that incident, the National Sea Rescue Institute cautioned the public regarding heightened shark activity along the stretch of coastline from Plettenberg Bay to the Southern Cape, noting that the concentration of marine predators appeared unusual compared to historical patterns.
