Christina Applegate Reveals She Was Misdiagnosed With Multiple Sclerosis

Actress Christina Applegate shared a stunning medical revelation during her return to the podcast “MeSsy,” announcing that she had been misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis. After stepping away from the podcast for seven months to focus on her health, Applegate became tearful while delivering the news to listeners in a two-part episode. She explained that advancements in medical technology ultimately led to the discovery that she does not have the condition she has battled publicly for years.
“This may come as great news, but to me, I’m back at square one,” Applegate said on the show. She recounted the moment her physician entered her room and delivered the unexpected verdict. Far from feeling relieved, Applegate admitted she was far from happy about the development, noting that her physical condition has not improved and has in some ways worsened. Because her symptoms persist without a definitive explanation, she stated that she is entirely back to square one regarding her health.
Applegate initially went public with her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2021. The chronic illness damages the central nervous system, and managing the condition eventually prompted her to step away from acting following the final season of her hit television series “Dead to Me” the following year. In the time since her diagnosis, she emerged as a prominent advocate for others living with the disease. Alongside co-host Jamie-Lynn Sigler, known for her work on “The Sopranos,” Applegate launched the “MeSsy” podcast to chronicle her journey and raise public awareness.
Even though medical testing cleared her of multiple sclerosis, Applegate emphasized that her day-to-day reality remains unchanged. She continues to experience every single symptom associated with the disease. Pointing out that numerous medical conditions share overlapping symptoms with multiple sclerosis, she noted that misdiagnoses occur at a remarkably high rate. Medical professionals are now investigating alternative explanations for her condition, suggesting that an entirely different underlying issue is responsible.
Reflecting on her years as a public face for the multiple sclerosis community, Applegate expressed feelings of guilt and disorientation. She admitted to feeling as though she had let down the people who looked to her for support and representation, describing her current mental state as a profound shock. Having a named diagnosis provided a concrete explanation for her daily struggles, and losing that framework has left her feeling deeply unnerved and confused.
During the second installment of the podcast, Applegate grew emotional while recounting the upheaval of the past five years. She described battling a deep depression after losing her career and watching her lifestyle come to a halt. Despite the change in her medical chart, her physical limitations persist. She noted that she still relies on wheelchairs for medical appointments because she is unable to walk independently from her vehicle to the examination room. Emphasizing the reality of her ongoing struggle, she noted that no miraculous recovery accompanied the doctor’s declaration.
