South Alabama Travels to Marshall for Crucial Sun Belt Showdown on Tuesday Night

The South Alabama Jaguars will look to extend their winning streak to three games when they travel to face the Marshall Thundering Herd in a pivotal Sun Belt Conference matchup on Tuesday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, West Virginia.

South Alabama enters the contest carrying momentum from a high-scoring 56-49 victory over Arkansas State in Week 7. The Jaguars sit at 4-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play, sharing the top spot in the Sun Belt West Division with Louisiana Tech. However, head coach and squad will need to address their road form, having posted a 1-2 record away from home so far this season.

Meanwhile, Marshall is looking to reverse a two-game skid. The Thundering Herd dropped to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the Sun Belt following a 27-21 defeat against Coastal Carolina. Despite their recent struggles, Marshall has fared better in front of their home fans, holding a 2-1 record at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in 2026. Tuesday’s game marks only the second-ever meeting between the two programs. In their only previous encounter back in 2023, South Alabama secured a dominant 28-0 shutout victory.

Offensively, the Jaguars are guided by junior quarterback Jared Hollins. Over the course of the season, Hollins has completed 60.9 percent of his pass attempts for 855 yards, throwing seven touchdowns against two interceptions.

In contrast, Marshall enters the midweek showdown facing significant uncertainty at the quarterback position. Head coach Tony Gibson revealed that the team has held an open competition in practice between senior Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, senior Zion Turner, and sophomore Khalil Wilkins to determine who will take the starting snaps against South Alabama.

Betting markets have established the visiting Jaguars as 2.5-point favorites, with the money line sitting at South Alabama -133 and Marshall +117. The over/under for total points is posted at 66.5. Computer simulations running 10,000 iterations project a lower-scoring affair than the oddsmakers’ total, forecasting roughly 56 combined points and pointing toward the Under hitting at a high frequency. Historical trends support that projection, as the Under has cashed in six of Marshall’s past ten games as well as the only prior meeting between the two teams.
