Michael Pledges $80 Million to Democratic Midterm Push as Republicans Mobilize Massive War Chest

Billionaire philanthropist and former New York City mayor Michael has committed $80 million to support Democratic candidates in the upcoming midterm elections, injecting critical financial resources into a party that has faced fundraising hurdles as it fights to regain control of Congress.

The contributions, made across September and October, target races aimed at flipping the US House of Representatives, where Republicans currently maintain a historically slim majority. Howard Wolfson, ’s political adviser, emphasized that the billionaire’s strategy looks beyond the bare minimum required to secure a chamber.

“The difference between 221 and 230, in terms of the House majority, really matters,” Wolfson noted, explaining that the funding is designed to build a comfortable operating margin.

, 84, served three terms as mayor of New York City from 2002 to 2013 as an independent before later registering as a Democrat. He previously spent $80 million to aid Democratic candidates during the 2018 midterms under Donald Trump’s first term, and later launched an unsuccessful bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.

His latest funding distribution includes $24 million allocated to Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun control advocacy group co-founded by that is actively spending on Democratic contenders in the lower chamber. Additionally, he directed $16 million to the House Majority Pac, an organization tied to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Beyond congressional races, has extended his financial footprint to state-level contests. He contributed $2.5 million to a super PAC backing James Talarico, the Democratic candidate in Texas’s US Senate race, and supported a super PAC backing New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s re-election alongside several other Democratic gubernatorial campaigns.

Asked about ‘s expectations for the investment, Wolfson stated, “He is of the view that resources matter in campaigns,” adding that the billionaire “expects a result.”

‘s financial intervention arrives alongside massive capital deployments from the Republican camp. Donald Trump announced plans to direct a total of $400 million toward Republican candidates, with $300 million already disbursed. Concurrently, presidential ally Elon Musk has funneled $366 million into conservative groups and campaigns.

Despite trailing Republicans in overall fundraising figures, Democrats maintain strong optimism regarding their prospects. Party leadership believes they are well-positioned to recapture the House and retain a realistic path toward securing the four additional seats required to retake control of the Senate, though outside observers view the upper chamber race as a toss-up.

Control of either legislative chamber carries immense stakes. A Democratic majority in Congress would grant the party the power to block Trump’s legislative agenda, launch robust investigations into his administration, and reject his nominees for the Supreme Court and other federal judicial vacancies.
