Joan Laporta Declares Open Confrontation with Real Madrid Ahead of Clásico

The institutional relationship between Spanish football giants FC Barcelona and Real Madrid has deteriorated to the point of outright confrontation, according to Barcelona President Joan Laporta. Speaking in a wide-ranging interview ahead of the season’s first El Clásico, Laporta asserted that any prior connection between the two clubs has completely vanished following what he described as constant attacks from the capital club regarding the ongoing ‘Negreira case’.
The judicial and fiscal investigation, known as the Negreira case, centers on multimillion-dollar payments made by Barcelona between 2001 and 2018 to companies owned by former referee José María Enríquez Negreira. Laporta argued that Real Madrid has leveraged the legal proceedings to distract from their own athletic struggles on the pitch and fading influence within governing institutions.
According to the Barcelona president, Real Madrid has lost credibility both institutionally and competitively. He criticized their recent transfer strategy, claiming they have spent heavily on expensive players who have failed to deliver expected results. By contrast, Laporta highlighted Barcelona’s current form, pointing to a perfect start to the domestic season and contrasting his club’s recent silverware with two consecutive trophyless campaigns for their historic rivals.
The verbal sparring comes at a crucial juncture in the football calendar. Barcelona prepares to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League, followed by a high-stakes LaLiga fixture against Real Madrid scheduled for Sunday, October 25.

Beyond the rivalry, Laporta addressed the long-term future of young star Lamine Yamal, whom he lauded as a generational talent and a leading candidate for the 2026 Ballon d’Or. Dismissing transfer rumors linking the 19-year-old Spanish international to other European powerhouses, the club president expressed complete confidence that the winger will remain at Camp Nou. Laporta emphasized Yamal’s roots in La Masia academy, his deep connection to the supporters, and his ongoing development within the club, remarking that the forward views Barcelona as the ideal environment for his career.
