Gustavo Oliva Passes Away in Barcelona After Viral Plea for Colon Cancer Screening

Gustavo Oliva, a 58-year-old sports enthusiast and former top Catalan padel player who used his final days to urge others to undergo colon cancer screenings, passed away this Monday. He died at midday after medical staff sedated him that morning at the Pere Virgili hospital in Barcelona, where he was receiving palliative care.

Just four days prior to his death, Oliva spoke publicly about coming to terms with his impending death, reflecting on a life well-lived and the deep satisfaction he felt seeing his two daughters, aged 33 and 30, established in their careers and lives. Diagnosed with colon cancer three years ago, Oliva frequently expressed that he viewed his remaining time as a gift, noting that doctors had never given him a three-year life expectancy.

Oliva traced the origin of his advanced diagnosis to his own hesitation in responding to a screening notification sent by the Generalitat when he turned fifty. Admitting he ignored the initial outreach, he did not undergo the screening test until he was 52 years old. By that time, the delay proved critical: a probe could not pass through his intestine due to two enormous tumors, alongside metastasis in his spleen and liver, and affected lymph nodes.

Despite the difficult prognosis, Oliva maintained an active lifestyle during periods without chemotherapy, returning to padel championships and riding long-distance bicycle routes during his first years of treatment. While his initial twelve-session chemotherapy regimen successfully reduced the size and aggressiveness of his tumors, subsequent annual treatments proved increasingly difficult. By March, he recognized that he was living on borrowed time.

Driven by a desire to prevent others from facing a similar fate, Oliva wrote a candid post on Instagram from his hospital bed just days before his death. Created in ten minutes without expecting significant reach, the message quickly went viral, accumulating thousands of likes and prompting numerous readers to promise they would get screened immediately.

Oliva held a degree in law from the University of Barcelona and in journalism from Pompeu Fabra University, and he was widely popular and deeply cherished by his family and community in Terrassa. Before his passing, he specifically requested that recognition be given to the exceptional care he received from medical professionals at the Hospital de Terrassa, Vall d’Hebron, and Parc Sanitari Pere Virgili.

Funeral arrangements begin with a wake opening Tuesday at noon at the Funeraria de Terrassa, followed by a farewell ceremony on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Terrassa, his hometown and lifelong residence.
