An Unusual Bond: Two Ex-Wives Find Lifelong Friendship Through Shared Past

When two close friends go out together, strangers frequently mistake them for sisters despite their contrasting appearances. One boasts dark hair, dark eyes, and fair skin, while the other is a blue-eyed blonde. When curious onlookers ask, the pair share a lighthearted response: they are ex-wives-in-law.
Behind the running joke lies an uncommon bond forged through trials and reinforced by trust, devotion, and shared laughter. Their connection began before the second marriage took place, as the man they both married was intent on them getting to know each other. Both women share children from previous or current relationships of similar ages, aligning their interests as mothers of boys.
Beyond parenting, they discovered mutual tastes in art, music, and literature. One memorable milestone occurred early in the second marriage when they attended a Prince concert together shortly before his death, serving as an early spark for their growing friendship.
The true turning point, however, occurred on the evening television broadcast of Caitlyn Jenner’s interview with Diane Sawyer. With all four boys participating on the same swim team and a swim meet underway, one of the women offered to bring food and cook dinner at the household shared by her former husband and his new wife. That evening of dinner, wine, and television viewing cemented a foundation.
Initially, the second wife admitted she found it peculiar that her husband’s ex-wife was so eager to cultivate a friendship. Even her mother remarked that resistance was futile, predicting that the first wife had already decided they would be friends.
That friendship faced significant tests when the second marriage ended in divorce after four years. The first wife supported her friend through the crisis, and their relationship deepened further through shared parenting struggles, career challenges, and personal health scares.
The bond faced an even deeper trial through the experience of caregiving for their aging mothers. The second wife experienced the process first, with her mother passing away on March 18, 2019. Three years later, on March 16, the first wife lost her own mother. Following the loss, the ex-husband, his second ex-wife, and his first ex-wife gathered in a living room to toast the matriarch with her favorite drink, gin and tonics.
Reflecting on the unusual dynamic, the ex-husband’s reaction evolved through stages resembling the grief process, moving from denial and anger to bargaining, depression, and eventually acceptance, occasionally referring to them as girlfriends.
Decades have passed since the original separations. The first divorce occurred 14 years ago, with the couple having been apart for 17 years, while the second marriage ended in divorce 10 years ago. Despite the unconventional path, both women emphasize the positive outcomes, noting that the shared connection ultimately delivered a lifelong friendship.
