A sudden surge of injuries on the water near Miami turned a routine day of boating into an urgent emergency response, with officials reporting that 11 people were hospitalized after a possible boat explosion.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said it responded shortly after 12:45 p.m.. Eastern time to a report of a possible explosion near the Haulover Sandbar.. Fire crews arrived to find multiple patients suffering a range of injuries. including burns. and some with more serious trauma. according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Juan Arias.
Altogether, officials said 11 patients were transported to a local hospital for further care. Their conditions were not immediately released, leaving families and witnesses waiting for updates as investigators work to determine what happened.
Because of the number of people injured and the department’s need for additional personnel. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue upgraded the response to what it described as a Level 2 Mass Casualty Incident.. The move reflected the scale of the scene and the complexity of providing treatment to multiple patients at once.
Officials emphasized that the cause of the possible explosion and subsequent fire is under investigation and that they had not yet confirmed that an explosion actually occurred.. Investigators are expected to determine what triggered the incident. including whether fire damage and injury patterns point to an explosion or another source of ignition.
Coast Guard crews and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were also involved in the response. according to Miami-Dade fire officials.. That multi-agency involvement is typical in incidents on navigable waters. where jurisdiction. vessel information. and safety procedures all come into play.
Nearby boat charter operator Patrick Lee said he witnessed the incident and described moments that appeared to unfold rapidly after ignition.. Lee said he saw three people fly out of the boat and suggested that those aboard moved quickly as the situation escalated. including what he described as an apparent failure to open hatches or operate onboard ventilation equipment.
Lee added that the vessel appeared to be surrounded by flames within minutes.. He said paramedics carried several people away on stretchers, and he reported seeing many victims with burns.. Lee characterized the fire as intense and fast-moving. attributing the speed of injuries to fuel on board and saying it contributed to the severity of what he observed.
Media reporting identified the boat involved as a Press Cruiser 400 Express. a 40-foot cabin cruiser called Nauti Nabors from Sherman. Texas.. The reporting said the vessel was certified for recreational use, citing information from a U.S.. Coast Guard database, while the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission indicated the boat was operating as a charter vessel.
Even as the circumstances remain under review, officials urged boaters to take practical precautions before heading out.. Arias said people planning time on the water should carry a radio. wear life vests. and keep fire extinguishers available in case of fires or explosions.. He also recommended that an experienced boater be on board. such as a captain. to help manage emergencies and maintain proper safety procedures.
This time of year. officials noted. there are many boats on the water. which can increase the likelihood that incidents draw immediate attention from nearby vessels.. In the aftermath of Saturday’s reported blast. authorities’ recommendations focused on preparedness and readiness. particularly for quick actions that could reduce harm while emergency crews coordinate their response.
