When iPhone Lenses Fail, One Maker Built An Upgrade

Tired of mobile camera limitations, one engineer has replaced his iPhone lenses with professional C-mount and EF-mount hardware.

The glass covering a modern smartphone camera often feels like the final hurdle between a convenient pocket device and a serious photographic tool. While manufacturers pour billions into sensors and processing, the physical optics remain restricted by the phone’s slim profile. Evan Monsma decided to stop waiting for the next software update. opting instead to physically dismantle his device to see what it could really do.

His initial attempt to bridge the gap involved replacing a broken iPhone lens with a C-mount optic. held in place by cyanoacrylate adhesive. It worked, but it was fragile; the glue eventually parted ways, leaving the project in pieces. Rather than reverting to the factory standard, Monsma returned to the workbench to build something more permanent and capable.

He machined a custom lens mount out of solid brass. designed to house high-quality optics while leaving the third. unmodified camera clear. This new structure is bonded to the phone with epoxy. To keep the delicate internals safe, he designed 3D-printed lens covers. The modification goes beyond mere optics. incorporating a machined tripod thread into the base of the brass assembly for stability during long-exposure or telephoto shots.

In testing. the modified device supports both C-mount and EF-mount lenses. the latter of which provides an extreme effective focal length. The results are impressive. though they reveal a curious artifact: a persistent pink glow. suggesting that an additional infrared filter would be the necessary next step for color accuracy.

The evolution of this project—from a fragile. glued-on hack to a machined brass interface—highlights a growing trend in consumer tech: users choosing to physically overhaul their devices rather than accept the limits of stock hardware. It is a bold, if permanent, solution to the constraints of mobile photography.
