Trump Confuses India and Brazil in Truth Social Post on Election Integrity

Former President Donald Trump mistakenly referenced India’s presidential election in a post criticizing U.S. voting processes, later correcting the post to refer to Brazil’s election.

Former President Donald Trump criticized the integrity of U.S. elections in a Truth Social post late Sunday night, erroneously contrasting the U.S. electoral process with the “first round of India’s Presidential Election.”

Trump’s post contained a factual error, as India has not held a presidential election since 2022. The former president appeared to be referencing Brazil, which began its presidential election on Sunday. Trump later deleted the post and shared a new version that correctly identified Brazil.

A screenshot of the original error remained on the White House’s Rapid Response page on X for several hours.

In his post. Trump argued that the results of the first round of Brazil’s election “came out shortly after the vote closed. on the SAME DAY!” He contrasted this with the U.S. stating. “In Detroit. Philadelphia. California. and numerous other U.S. Cities and States. the results. with much smaller numbers. will often take weeks to Rig. I mean. calculate. ” before declaring that “Voting in America is CORRUPT!!!”.

Brazil’s election system relies entirely on electronic voting machines, which allows for the rapid delivery of results.

Trump’s praise for Brazil’s electronic system contrasts with his recent domestic rhetoric. During a speech in July, Trump claimed that Americans were “blatantly lied to about the security of our election infrastructure, including the security of electronic voting machines.”

To support that claim in July. Trump cited a 2020 memo from the National Intelligence Council regarding the potential for foreign agents to compromise U.S. election infrastructure. However. as noted by FactCheck.org. that same document detailed that the infrastructure “would be difficult to manipulate on a wide enough scale to alter the election outcome.”.
