Tesla Expands Home Backup Capability to Model 3 and Y

Tesla Powershare – Tesla is rolling out its Powershare Home Backup feature to Model 3 and Model Y owners, allowing electric vehicles to serve as temporary home power supplies during outages.

When the power grid fails, the garage might now hold the key to keeping the lights on. Tesla is expanding its Powershare Home Backup feature beyond the Cybertruck, opening the capability to select Model 3 and Model Y owners.

For those who own a Powerwall 3, the vehicle battery can now step in during an outage. While the system currently limits this support to the Powerwall 3. Tesla has indicated that compatibility for the Powerwall 2 and Powerwall Plus is coming soon. The integration offers a significant boost to residential resilience. with the company noting that Premium and Performance versions of these EVs can extend home backup duration to over two days. This capacity sits just behind the Cybertruck, which boasts over three days of home power.

Technical constraints define who can actually access this feature. Tesla is guaranteeing the service only for Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered from October 1st onward. as earlier models lack the necessary PCS2 Lite inverter hardware. Even with a newer vehicle. the rollout remains geographically restricted to the United States and Puerto Rico. leaving Canadian owners without the option. Furthermore. the feature is not yet available for the larger Model S or Model X. and the more advanced Powershare Grid Support feature remains exclusive to the Cybertruck.

Tesla’s move places it alongside a growing field of competitors. Kia and General Motors already provide vehicle-to-home power options. and the Nissan Leaf pioneered the concept of power-to-grid charging years ago. The industry is clearly shifting toward a model where vehicles serve as mobile storage units for the home. but for Tesla owners. the transition depends heavily on the specific date of purchase and the equipment installed on the wall of their garage.
