Tesla Begins Humanoid Robot Production at Fremont Factory Facility

Tesla has commenced the production of its long-awaited humanoid robot, Optimus, at its Fremont factory in California, according to the company’s quarterly earnings report. The automaker stated that the units currently rolling off the assembly line represent the first production-quality bots it has manufactured.

While the company intends to continue refining both the hardware and the underlying manufacturing process for Optimus, it noted that the current production methods have been proven suitable for a commercial product. However, Tesla has not yet announced a specific timeline for when Optimus will become commercially available to consumers or businesses.

Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk previously cautioned regarding the pace at which the company can expand its manufacturing output, describing the scaling process as likely to be “agonizingly slow.” To accommodate the new robotics initiative, Tesla halted the production of its Model S and Model X vehicles at the Fremont plant earlier this year, clearing space for an initial production line engineered with the ultimate capacity to yield one million robots annually. Additionally, a second manufacturing line is currently under construction in Austin, Texas, with a projected annual capacity of ten million robots.

Tesla enters an increasingly competitive humanoid robotics sector alongside several other firms developing similar automation technologies. Agility Robotics, which is preparing for an initial public offering, has deployed its Digit robot across nine distinct customer facilities. Meanwhile, Figure AI has confirmed ongoing deployments within logistics and distribution centers throughout the year. Several other competitors, including Sunday Robotics, 1X, and Weave Robotics, are preparing to ship their respective robotic systems into residential markets this fall.
