Sunrise Senior Living’s leadership team is partnering with BDT & MSD to acquire the company from PSP Investments, aiming to fuel massive growth.
For more than 45 years. Sunrise Senior Living has shaped the landscape of elderly care. but today marks a transition that promises to reshape its future. The McLean. Virginia-based company announced that a new partnership led by its senior executive team and merchant bank BDT & MSD Partners will acquire the firm from its current owner. the Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments).
The move signals a significant pivot for the organization. which currently operates more than 230 communities across the United States and Canada. These locations serve more than 22,000 residents, but the scope of this transition extends far beyond existing facilities. Sunrise is currently managing an active development pipeline of more than 50 new communities. representing an estimated $7.5 billion investment in the sector.
Following the acquisition, expected to close in 2027 pending regulatory approvals, the existing leadership team—headed by CEO Jack R. Callison, Jr.—will remain in place. They are not merely staying on; they are investing significant personal capital into the deal alongside the new majority owners. BDT & MSD. For PSP Investments, the deal marks the conclusion of a tenure that began in 2014, leading to sole ownership in 2023. Simon Marc. Senior Vice President and Global Head of Private Equity and Real Estate Investments at PSP. characterized the sale as part of a broader portfolio rotation strategy. aimed at recycling capital into new opportunities after successfully executing a multi-year business plan.
Behind the transaction lies a clear strategic bet on the intersection of hospitality and specialized care. BDT & MSD brings a background that includes managing real estate platforms like Greystar and Speed Bay. as well as high-profile hospitality assets such as Four Seasons Hualalai and The Boca Raton. By bringing this hospitality-focused expertise into the senior living space. the new owners aim to lean into the brand’s origins—a mission founded in 1981 to blend wellness with a luxury. service-oriented lifestyle.
J.P. Morgan Securities LLC and Jones Lang LaSalle Securities, LLC are serving as advisors to PSP Investments for the transition. As the firm looks toward 2027. the focus remains on scaling the platform while maintaining the operational standards of a company that remains one of the largest players in private-pay. premium senior housing.
