Summer H. Howell Takes On The Modern Carrie White

Rising star Summer H. Howell steps into the iconic role of Carrie White for a modern, series-length reimagining of the Stephen King classic.
The hallways of high school are often fraught with tension. but for the latest iteration of Carrie White. those pressures are amplified by the relentless gaze of the digital age. Prime Video’s upcoming series version of the classic Stephen King story places the powerful. isolated teenager into a contemporary world where viral bullying creates a new. suffocating reality. Stepping into the role is 22-year-old Summer H. Howell, an actress no stranger to the demands of the horror genre.
Born on May 22. 2004. the Manitoba. Canada native began her journey toward the screen early. landing a Crest toothpaste commercial at the age of nine. Her career path was influenced by her brother. Chase Howell. who also works in the film industry after being discovered at an open casting call in Winnipeg. Seeing her brother enter the craft served as a catalyst for Summer to pursue acting herself.
Her resume has been built on a foundation of genre projects that predate this latest assignment. Before becoming the face of the new Carrie, she appeared in “Curse of Chucky,” “The Midnight Man,” “Cult of Chucky,” “Hunter Hunter,” “All Fun and Games,” “Time Cut,” and “Night of the Reaper.”

In this new adaptation. the character’s trajectory begins in seclusion. living under the thumb of her strict and protective mother. Margaret. The narrative shifts when the sudden death of Carrie’s father forces her out of that quiet. sheltered existence and into the chaos of a modern public school. There. she must grapple not only with the familiar pitfalls of adolescence and the cruelty of social media but with the emergence of telekinetic powers she is struggling to contain.
Showrunner Mike Flanagan has signaled that this version seeks to expand the scope of the original 1976 film’s premise. While previous adaptations have often confined the story to a 90-minute film format. this series aims to explore the character as part of a broader community of women. For Flanagan. the project is a lens through which to examine young women discovering their own power and the complexities inherent in that transition. By shifting the focus to a series format. the production aims to move beyond what horror fans might assume. framing the story as a study of gifted women finding their place in the world.
