Stoughton High School Locked Down Three Times Over Edibles

Stoughton High School in Massachusetts initiated three separate shelter-in-place orders Tuesday to manage medical emergencies tied to student consumption of THC edibles.
The school day at Stoughton High School in Massachusetts was repeatedly interrupted Tuesday as administrators issued three separate shelter-in-place orders. The measures were put in place to ensure emergency medical crews could reach students requiring urgent care following the consumption of THC-laced marijuana edibles.
Principal Ryan Augusta confirmed the “unusual” sequence of events in a letter sent to the school community. While he noted that some of the day’s medical calls were standard issues that can occur in any school setting. others were directly tied to students ingesting cannabis products. which are typically sold as gummies. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the primary chemical in cannabis responsible for its intoxicating effects.
Though the campus was placed under lockdown protocols, classes were allowed to continue as scheduled. Augusta praised the student body for navigating the day with “patience and maturity,” even as the recurring presence of first responders created a high-pressure environment.
Privacy concerns have kept specific details regarding the students’ identities and the exact count of those affected under wraps. A spokesperson for Stoughton Public Schools declined to provide numbers. and Augusta emphasized that the priority remains the health and well-being of the youth involved. “These are our classmates and neighbors. and they are entitled to privacy on what was a hard day for them. ” he wrote.
Beyond the immediate medical response, school leadership issued a blunt warning to families regarding the dangers of unregulated cannabis. Augusta cautioned that edibles often carry delayed effects, which frequently leads to accidental overconsumption. Furthermore. he noted that products passed between students may contain substances far more potent than what is listed on their labels. and in some instances. may contain entirely different chemical components.
In Massachusetts, the legal age for recreational cannabis consumption is 21. While school officials confirmed that the student code of conduct will be utilized to address the possession and use of these items. Augusta stressed that the institutional response remains focused on student safety above all else. “We will handle that side of it,” he stated. “But a student’s health comes first, always.”.
