Souplantation Returns to California With Fountain Valley Location Opening
Souplantation returns – The beloved buffet chain Souplantation is set to return to California in 2027, with a new location planned for Fountain Valley.
The long-awaited return of the limitless salad bar and soup station finally has a place and a year. After disappearing from the California landscape during the uncertainty of 2020. Souplantation is preparing to reopen its doors in the Golden State. with the company confirming a 2027 launch in the Orange County city of Fountain Valley.
For those who remember the chain for its fresh-made salads. pizza. and soups. the news follows a cryptic October 5 social media teaser. Sweet Tomatoes—the brand’s sister name—posted an image of a “Welcome to California” sign adorned with palm trees and the simple caption “Stay tuned.” By October 6. spokesperson Marlee Lossing confirmed the return. and by the following day. the Fountain Valley site was identified. The restaurant is likely to occupy its former space at 11179 Talbert Ave. which has sat shuttered since the onset of the pandemic.
This comeback marks a return to the brand’s roots. Launched in San Diego in 1978, Souplantation grew to 97 locations across California, the Southwest, and Florida. It initially aimed to serve as the first casual eatery offering fresh. wholesome menu options. though the brand did face periodic backlash regarding its name over the years.
The collapse of the chain was as swift as it was sudden. After a 2016 Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing and a subsequent sale to the private investment firm Perpetual Capital Partners. the company appeared to be on a path to recovery. By January 2020, the firm was actively renovating restaurants with new carpeting, signage, and fixtures. Then came the pandemic.
“We went from 100 percent to 70 to 30 to 10 percent that fast,” Perpetual Capital Partners chairman Robert Allbritton recounted of the 2020 closure. The company ran out of money in a single week, leading to the permanent shuttering of all remaining locations. While Sweet Tomatoes has since quietly resurfaced in Tucson. Arizona. and Fort Myers. Florida. the brand has remained absent from its home state until now.
The path from the 2020 collapse to the 2027 reopening spans seven years of industry shifts. The brand survived its financial and operational crises only to be halted by a global health event. and it now faces the challenge of re-establishing a model once defined by the very open-buffet culture that faltered during the pandemic. With the Fountain Valley site slated for 2027. the company is betting that the nostalgia for the all-you-can-eat experience will remain a staple for California diners.
