Skydance Opens On Wall Street Amidst Heavy Debt Load
Skydance – David Ellison’s new media giant takes to the NYSE as the real work of managing an $80 billion debt load begins.
The confetti had barely settled on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange this Thursday when the reality of the task at hand set in. For David Ellison and his leadership team. ringing the opening bell marked the official start of a new chapter. signaling the completion of the merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery to form the media powerhouse Skydance.
Down on the trading floor, the atmosphere was jubilant. Executives. including new co-CEO Ynon Kreiz—who joined the team less than a week after leaving his role as Mattel’s CEO—mingled with investors from RedBird Capital. Banners draped across the building’s exterior displayed the Skydance logo alongside the familiar branding of Paramount and Warner Bros. Displays of Hollywood history stood in the lobby. featuring props like a helmet from the best-picture nominee ‘Top Gun: Maverick. ‘ a Gryffindor uniform and Golden Snitch from the Harry Potter franchise. and shoes from the Oscar-winning ‘Forrest Gump.’.
Despite the pageantry, the ledger tells a more complicated story. The new company is saddled with a debt load of approximately $80 billion. While Skydance shares climbed more than 5% during the session. the broader trajectory remains a struggle; the stock has lost nearly half its value in the last 12 months and sits down 30% for the year.
Ellison remains undeterred by the numbers. Speaking to reporters at the NYSE, he framed the merger as a strategic necessity in a volatile market. “We are positioned to win in every single vertical that we operate in,” Ellison said. “By combining Paramount and Warner Bros., we have the greatest content engine with marquee intellectual property.”.
The challenge, however, is not just in the balance sheet, but in the operational mechanics of the business. Ellison and his team now face fierce competition in the streaming space from industry titans like Netflix, Disney, and YouTube. Beyond the high-level branding. the leadership must find a functional path to integrate streamers Paramount+ and HBO Max into a cohesive unit.
This week’s ceremony served as a symbolic pivot point. For months, the industry has watched the Paramount-WBD saga unfold, tracking the corporate maneuvers that brought them to this Thursday. While the bell-ringing provided a moment of celebration for the leadership team. the genuine test for Skydance is only just beginning.
