Senator Chris Murphy Hospitalized Following a Stroke

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut was hospitalized over the weekend after experiencing a stroke, according to a statement released Sunday by his office.

The 53-year-old lawmaker first noticed symptoms while watching his son’s hockey game, where he began feeling numbness in his arm, chief of staff Allison Herwitt said. He was immediately taken to a local medical facility, where physicians confirmed he had suffered a stroke.

Murphy was subsequently transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital for specialized monitoring. His office reported that he is awake, alert, and responding well to medical intervention. Doctors expressed encouragement regarding his recovery, and his staff remains optimistic that he will make a full recovery.

The medical emergency forced Murphy to cancel campaign travel. He had been scheduled to appear in New Hampshire on Sunday to campaign alongside Representative Chris Pappas, the Democratic Senate nominee in the state. While Murphy is not up for re-election himself this year, he has maintained an active travel schedule across the country supporting Democratic candidates.

Murphy, a prominent figure in the upper chamber, recently criticized plans discussed by President Donald Trump regarding a potential resumption of conflict with Iran following the midterms, calling the proposal “insane” during a Thursday appearance at the Middle East Institute in Washington. Earlier this fall, Murphy’s congressional office was also among more than a dozen lawmaker offices that received mail containing suspicious substances.
