Rybakina Defends Ningbo Title as Swiatek and Kostyuk Chase WTA Finals Berth

World No. 1 Elena Rybakina arrives at the BNB Ningbo Open under vastly different circumstances than her title-winning run twelve months ago. Last year, the Kazakh needed to capture the tournament trophy to secure her qualification for the year-end WTA Finals, a goal she successfully accomplished to claim the eighth and final spot. This season, Rybakina enters the WTA 500 event already qualified for the WTA Finals Indian Wells, though her recent participation during the Asian Swing has been limited due to an ongoing foot injury that forced her withdrawal from the Dongfeng · Voyah Wuhan Open.

While the top seed begins her title defense, the race for the remaining qualification spots intensifies in Ningbo. Iga Swiatek and Marta Kostyuk, seeded No. 2 and No. 3 respectively, remain active in the hunt for the final qualifying position. Both players aim to close the gap on Karolina Muchova, who currently holds the No. 7 position in the Race while sitting idle.

The tournament draw is divided into two distinct halves, featuring high-stakes opening rounds and potential late-stage showdowns.

In the top half of the draw, Rybakina receives a first-round bye before facing either Cristina Bucsa or a qualifier in her opening match. However, her path toward consecutive titles presents multiple challenges. The top half includes No. 4 seed Iva Jovic, No. 5 seed Belinda Bencic, No. 6 seed Diana Shnaider, alongside unseeded competitors Maja Chwalinska, Alexandra Eala, and Jasmine Paolini.

Among the opening-round matches in the top half, No. 5 seed Belinda Bencic meets Jelena Ostapenko in their fourth career head-to-head meeting. The two players enter the contest at differing stages of their respective seasons. Bencic has struggled to find momentum, posting a 1-4 record since withdrawing from her scheduled quarterfinal match against Coco Gauff in Toronto on August 11. Conversely, Ostapenko arrives fresh off a semifinal run in Wuhan, where she secured notable wins over Jessica Pegula and Diana Shnaider.

Another opening-round fixture features young talents Alexandra Eala and Diane Parry, both seeking to break a losing skid and win their first match since the US Open. Eala aims to halt a three-match losing streak, while Monterrey champion Parry enters the match having dropped her last four outings. Additional first-round matches in the top half include Cristina Bucsa facing a qualifier or lucky loser, Maja Chwalinska playing a qualifier or lucky loser, Jasmine Paolini taking on a qualifier or lucky loser, and No. 6 seed Diana Shnaider meeting a qualifier or lucky loser.

A potential semifinal clash in the top half could pit Rybakina against No. 4 seed Iva Jovic. Last year, Rybakina defeated the American teenager in two straight sets on both occasions. Jovic, however, enters the potential rematch with an opportunity to demonstrate her development following an active post-US Open schedule that featured a successful title defense in Guadalajara and consecutive Round of 16 appearances in Beijing and Wuhan.

The bottom half of the draw centers on the qualification chase between Kostyuk and Swiatek. Several competitors, including No. 7 seed Elise Mertens, No. 8 seed Sorana Cirstea, and unseeded Ekaterina Alexandrova, look to disrupt their bids for the Indian Wells qualification spot.

A compelling first-round encounter in the bottom half features No. 7 seed Elise Mertens against Leylah Fernandez. Mertens holds a 2-1 advantage in their previous head-to-head meetings, all of which occurred on hard courts. Because the pair has not faced each other in more than a year and both enter the tournament in solid form during the Asian Swing, a competitive three-set match could materialize.

In another opening-round fixture, Sara Bejlek faces Wang Xiyu. Their only previous career meeting occurred this summer in Toronto, where Bejlek secured a hard-fought victory with a score of 6–3, 4–6, 7–5.

Rounding out the remaining first-round matches in the bottom half, Daria Kasatkina meets a qualifier or lucky loser, Guo Hanyu plays Ekaterina Alexandrova, No. 8 seed Sorana Cirstea faces a qualifier or lucky loser, and Marie Bouzkova takes on a qualifier or lucky loser.

A prospective semifinal showdown in the bottom half could deliver the sixth career meeting between Marta Kostyuk and Iga Swiatek, and their third encounter of the season. Kostyuk previously defeated Swiatek en route to the semifinals at Roland Garros in June, but Swiatek responded with a three-set comeback victory in Toronto. The winner of a potential semifinal meeting between the two contenders would capture prime positioning to secure a year-end Indian Wells berth, while the loser faces a significantly more difficult climb in the closing weeks of the season.
