Rachel Bilson on Motherhood, Boundaries and Her Return to Horror Comedy

Rachel Bilson spent her twenties defining early-2000s television culture as Summer Roberts on the hit teen drama The O.C., but today her focus rests squarely on a much quieter domestic rhythm. At 45, the actor has embraced a lifestyle centered around home comforts, parenting her nearly 12-year-old daughter, Briar Rose, and taking on acting projects selectively.
Bilson shares her daughter with her ex-partner, actor Hayden Christensen, and has made a conscious effort to keep Briar’s upbringing removed from public visibility. As her daughter approaches the teenage milestone, Bilson is navigating the gradual loosening of reins while maintaining firm ground rules, particularly regarding digital life. Social media remains entirely off-limits. When joking about future app access with her daughter, Bilson tells her she can get Instagram at age 35, adding that any early phone will strictly be a basic device without app access.
Protecting childhood remains her top priority, a perspective that sharpened after becoming a mother. While Bilson describes herself as a natural people pleaser in other areas of life, that tendency vanishes when it comes to defending her daughter’s boundaries. Teaching children early tools for handling peer relationships and recognizing unhealthy social dynamics is a central parenting strategy in her household.
Despite her selective approach to Hollywood scripts, Bilson recently returned to the big screen in Christmas at the Kringles, a holiday horror comedy arriving in theaters on Oct. 30. Directed by Kevin Lewis, the film features a cast that includes Ron Livingston and Rob Riggle. Bilson notes that knowing the director and her co-stars made the decision to join the project effortless, calling the set experience the most fun and laughter-filled of her career.

In the film, her character portrays a mother whose family relocation takes a dark turn due to unsettling neighbors. Bilson points out that while the film explores extreme parental anxieties, her real life with Briar involves much lighter bonding moments, such as sharing classic romantic comedies like 27 Dresses and My Best Friend’s Wedding, alongside school events and extracurricular activities.
Reflecting on her career-defining role on The O.C. and whether she would ever revisit the iconic series, Bilson admits she would readily say yes, noting her close bond with series creator Josh Schwartz. When asked where her character Summer Roberts might be today, Bilson imagines she would be married to Seth Cohen with a family, possibly working as a lawyer due to her penchant for argument, with children now reaching high school age.

For now, however, Bilson is fully content enjoying her 40s on her own terms, embracing cozy routines like knitting and early bedtimes while keeping the spotlight firmly separate from her family’s everyday life.
