Publix To Close Seven Stores Amid Cooling Sales Growth

The lights will go out at seven Publix locations by the end of this year as the grocer grapples with a tightening retail environment. For the communities built around these specific storefronts. the transition marks the end of a neighborhood fixture. even as the company signals that some of these sites are slated for future rebuilds.

The store closures are spread across three states: four in Florida, two in Georgia, and one in South Carolina. In Florida, the affected addresses include 5577 Park Street N in St. Petersburg, 8250 Mills Drive in Miami, 828 Southern Boulevard in West Palm Beach, and 4711 Babcock Street NE in Palm Bay. The Georgia exits include 1380 Atlantic Drive NW in Atlanta and 2562 Shallowford Road NE in Chamblee. while the Goose Creek. South Carolina location at 208 Saint James Avenue will also cease operations.

Financial reality sits at the center of the decision. While the Lakeland. Florida-based chain reported sales of $15.7 billion for the 13 weeks ending June 27—a modest 1% increase over the $15.6 billion from the same period last year—growth remains sluggish. For the first six months of 2024. sales reached $31.9 billion. up only slightly from the $31.4 billion recorded during the first half of 2023.

The pressure on the bottom line is clear when looking at the recent quarterly performance. Comparable-store sales dipped 0.5% in the second quarter and 0.3% over the first six months of the year. The company points to softer consumer spending and shifts in Medicare drug pricing as the primary weights dragging down those figures.

This follows a difficult first quarter where the retailer saw net income fall to $794 million. a 21.5% drop from the $1 billion reported in the same period a year ago. That earlier decline was largely tied to unrealized losses on equity securities. a financial hurdle that compounded the ongoing challenges of maintaining consistent growth in an unpredictable retail landscape.
