Patricia Krenwinkel Granted Parole Fifty-Six Years After Killings

After over five decades in prison for her role in the Manson family murders, Patricia Krenwinkel has been granted parole, though her release remains subject to final review.

The weight of the Manson family’s shadow over California narrowed on Tuesday. as a parole panel moved to grant freedom to 78-year-old Patricia Krenwinkel. It marks the third time in her 56-year incarceration that the board has deemed her suitable for release. yet the decision—reached at her 18th hearing—remains caught in a long-standing cycle of legal review and executive intervention.

Krenwinkel, who did not appear at the hearing, is currently held at the California Institution for Women in Corona. Her path to this point relies on her eligibility under the state’s elderly inmate parole program and her status as a youthful offender at the time of the 1969 slayings. The path to freedom is now a 150-day gauntlet: the decision must clear the board’s legal office within 120 days before heading to the governor’s desk. where he holds a final 30-day window to either approve or reverse the grant.

Her history in the criminal justice system is marked by repeated reversals. In October 2025. Governor Gavin Newsom blocked her release. acknowledging her self-improvement efforts while maintaining that the danger she poses to the public outweighs her personal growth. He previously argued that she failed to develop sufficient insight into the causative factors of her crimes and the triggers for her antisocial conduct. Los Angeles prosecutors have already signaled their intent to urge the governor to intervene once more.

Convicted in 1971, Krenwinkel was a central figure in a killing spree that terrified the nation. She was sentenced to death for the murders of Sharon Tate. Thomas Jay Sebring. Abigail Ann Folger. Wojciech Frykowski. Steven Earl Parent. and the subsequent slayings of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. Following the 1972 ruling that deemed the death penalty unconstitutional, her sentence was commuted to life with the possibility of parole. During her testimony. Krenwinkel admitted to chasing Folger. stabbing her more than two dozen times. and using the victim’s blood to scrawl “Death to pigs” on the walls.

The human cost of those nights remains an active, public force. Debra Tate. the sister of Sharon Tate. continues to lead a campaign against the release of Manson’s followers. noting in a petition signed by over 100. 000 people that society cannot allow a serial killer responsible for such gruesome crimes to go free. The legal landscape surrounding the Manson family has shifted recently. however; in 2023. former follower Leslie Van Houten was released after an appellate court overruled the governor’s denial of her parole.

While Krenwinkel’s attorney has previously pointed to abuse she suffered under Manson at age 21. the legal reality remains that the architects and participants of these crimes are now elderly. dwindling in number. and facing the final years of their sentences. As the clock begins on the 120-day review period. the case once again forces a confrontation between the brutal legacy of the 1960s and the evolving standards of California’s correctional system.
