OpenAI Shifts From Text to Interactive Visual Interfaces
OpenAI is moving beyond walls of text with a new ‘Intelligent UI’ update, introducing interactive custom elements powered by the GPT-6 model.
The wall of text that has defined the chatbot experience since the launch of generative AI is finally starting to crumble. On Wednesday, OpenAI unveiled an “Intelligent UI” update for ChatGPT, shifting the platform toward custom, interactive visual elements rather than static blocks of information.
This new interface, powered by the GPT-6 model, hits paid accounts today and becomes available to free users tomorrow. During a hands-on preview, the shift was immediate. A request for a diagram of a slug returned more than just a description; it provided an anatomy-focused visual equipped with buttons. Users can tap specific features, from the upper tentacles to the muscular foot, to explore the organism.
Beyond basic diagrams, the interface leans into utility. One test involved a San Francisco apartment affordability calculator. complete with movable sliders to adjust income and expenses. allowing users to see real-time shifts in housing costs relative to take-home pay. Another tool, an airplane seat explorer, allowed for direct comparisons of cabin layouts between four different Alaska and Delta aircraft. By tapping a seat on the generated map. users could reveal specific details. with the system even highlighting exit rows in green.
This marks a significant departure from the standard chatbot format, mirroring a broader trend seen earlier this year when Google introduced “generative UI” in its search engine, such as sliders that explain the mechanics of black holes.
Product manager Aarush Selvan notes that the implementation of these visuals is deliberate rather than constant. The design team has spent extensive time determining when a chart. diagram. or button adds actual value versus when it simply creates clutter. For those who prefer a cleaner interface, the system allows users to request fewer visual outputs.
This evolution represents a definitive shift toward a multimodal era. where the boundaries between text. image. and voice continue to blur for more than a billion users. As AI begins to dictate the aesthetic and functional layout of software on the fly. the role of human designers may face a period of redefinition. For now. the takeaway is clear: the age of the text-heavy chatbot is rapidly being replaced by personalized. interactive software. proving that a custom diagram can often tell a story that a thousand words cannot.
