One Year After Cancellation, Dick Wolf’s On Call Finds New Life

Despite being axed by Prime Video last year, Dick Wolf’s eight-part crime drama On Call is climbing the charts again.
A year after the cameras stopped rolling and the final episode hit the cutting room floor. the Long Beach streets of ‘On Call’ are suddenly bustling again. The eight-part crime drama. a rare streaming-first venture from the Dick Wolf production empire. has found an unlikely second wind. climbing to the No. 10 spot on Prime Video as of October 6.
For a series that was officially canceled in May 2025. the resurgence serves as a quiet vindication for a project that struggled to find its footing during its initial run. While the show—produced by Wolf’s son. Elliot Wolf. and Tim Walsh—premiered in January 2025 to mixed reviews from critics. boasting only a 55% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. the audience reaction told a different story. Fans pushed the series to the top of the U.S. streaming charts during its debut, and that persistent interest remains, supported by a 91% audience score on the platform.
The show tracks the high-stakes dynamic between a veteran training officer. played by Troian Bellisario. and her rookie partner. Brandon Larracuente. as they navigate the investigation of a fellow officer’s murder. The supporting cast features Lori Loughlin—in a major television return following the 2019 College Admissions Scandal—alongside Eriq La Salle. Robert Bailey Jr. Rich Ting. Mac Brandt. and Lobo Sebastian. with guest appearances from Monica Raymund. Ian Down. and Annabella Didion.
When the cancellation notice came down in May. Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television attempted to shop the series to other outlets. but those efforts never materialized into a revival. ‘On Call’ occupies a unique place in the broader Dick Wolf catalog; it stands apart from the sprawling broadcast franchises. and even differs from ‘Law & Order: Organized Crime. ‘ which transitioned from NBC to Peacock for its fifth and final season in 2025.
While the drama’s future remains closed. the timing of its resurgence coincides with a massive week for the rest of the Wolf production slate. As fans revisit the eight episodes of ‘On Call. ‘ the broadcast giants return: the ninth season of ‘FBI’ and the second season of ‘CIA’ launched on CBS on October 5. the same day the second season of ‘Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent’ premiered on The CW. The ‘One Chicago’ series are set to return on October 7 on NBC with promised shake-ups. followed by the 28th season of ‘Law & Order: SVU’ and the 26th season of ‘Law & Order’ on October 8.
With his focus firmly fixed on the powerhouse ‘FBI. ‘ ‘One Chicago. ‘ and ‘Law & Order’ franchises. and a recent pivot toward unscripted projects like 2024’s ‘Homicide’ on Netflix. Wolf appears to have moved past the ‘On Call’ experiment. Yet, the data suggests that for those still pressing play, the short-lived police procedural still holds a firm grip.
