Mother Arrested After Teen Daughter Impregnated by Her Father

Ofelia Garcia Ortega is in custody following the discovery of her 14-year-old daughter’s abuse and the death of an infant in Monterey County.

The path to the Salinas Superior Courthouse on Tuesday afternoon ended in handcuffs for Ofelia Garcia Ortega. Detectives from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office took the 36-year-old mother into custody. marking a grim expansion in a case that began with the discovery of a dead infant abandoned along a county road.

That infant, identified by law enforcement as “Baby Angelita,” was found on Aug. 1 along Struve Road, suffering from traumatic injuries. The investigation into the child’s death soon peeled back layers of a fractured domestic life. leading authorities to the girl’s 14-year-old daughter. Prosecutors assert the teenager was a victim of sexual assault by her own biological father, Sergio Galvez Perez.

By early September. the search for the pair had intensified into an Amber Alert. which concluded when Perez and his daughter were located in Janos. a town in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Perez. who now faces charges including lewd acts upon a child with an enhancement for inflicting “great bodily injury. ” incest. and child abuse. remains in custody. The teenager is currently under the care of a Mexican government agency tasked with child protection.

The charges against Garcia Ortega draw a picture of a home life where the girl was kept hidden from the structures meant to protect her. Investigators determined the mother used falsified documentation to force her 13-year-old daughter into labor in agricultural fields. Beyond the illegal work. officials state the mother allowed the girl to drive without a license and kept her out of school for months at a time.

This is not Garcia Ortega’s first encounter with the justice system during this investigation. She was initially arrested on Aug. 4 on suspicion of child endangerment, posting $50,000 bail that same day. Tuesday’s arrest. however. brings more severe accusations: two felony counts of possessing or displaying a forged identification card. along with misdemeanor counts of permitting child endangerment and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Cmdr. Andres Rosas of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrest occurred at 2:45 p.m. without incident. As of Tuesday evening, Garcia Ortega remained in the Monterey County Jail, held on an enhanced bail of $150,000. She had not posted bond.
