As the Los Angeles Dodgers prepare to face the Atlanta Braves in Game 4 of the NLDS, Mookie Betts reaches a historic postseason milestone.
The calendar has a way of finding Mookie Betts in October. When the Los Angeles Dodgers take the field against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm ET. their star leadoff hitter will be marking more than just a crucial Game 4. As Betts turns 34. he will be stepping onto the diamond to play a postseason game on his birthday for the fourth time in his career. an MLB record.
It is a rare rhythm for an athlete, and for Betts, it comes at a moment of transition. While the veteran has endured a relatively quiet postseason—looking at times like an aging star struggling to find traction at the plate against the Braves—the weight of this series remains squarely on the shoulders of the Dodgers’ core.
On Tuesday, the team found its momentum in a Game 3 win fueled by an epic performance from pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The offensive spark followed, as the Dodgers broke through against Braves ace Chris Sale. Two consecutive home runs—the second launched by former Atlanta star Freddie Freeman—provided the three runs necessary to secure a victory and pull the team back into the driver’s seat.
This sequence of events has left the Dodgers just one win away from advancing to the NLCS. A victory on Wednesday would secure their spot, setting up a clash against either the San Diego Padres or the Milwaukee Brewers for the right to represent the National League in the World Series.
For Betts, the birthday milestone serves as a backdrop to the immediate urgency of the postseason. Whether this personal chapter provides the catalyst for the production the Dodgers need remains the lingering question as the lights go up in Atlanta. The team arrives at this threshold with the series lead, seeking to finish what they started on Tuesday.
