Mike Tyson Defends Donald Trump as Political Perseverance Test

Boxing legend Mike Tyson reflects on his decades-long friendship with Donald Trump, drawing parallels between the politician’s legal battles and his own life experiences.

The bond between Mike Tyson and Donald Trump was forged in the neon glow of 1980s Atlantic City. a connection that has survived nearly four decades of professional rupture and personal upheaval. While the boxing legend has seen most of his early inner circle dissolve—from the death of trainer Cus D’Amato in 1985 to the dissolution of his marriage to Robin Givens in 1989 and the messy split from promoter Don King in the late 1990s—the former president remains a constant figure.

Speaking on a recent episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored. the 60-year-old Tyson offered a raw. unflinching defense of his longtime friend. “I voted for him,” Tyson said. “I ran the streets for him. I’m very proud of him. He’s somebody that everybody should be proud of.” For Tyson. the admiration stems from a perceived resilience against systemic adversity. He pointed to Trump’s history of bankruptcies and legal challenges, framing them not as failures but as character tests.

“If you didn’t know who Donald Trump was and you didn’t know his name. you would think he’s Black. ” Tyson claimed. drawing an unusual parallel to the experiences of African-American men. He further highlighted the way Trump has navigated public sexual misconduct allegations, noting, “People don’t normally go that well. They normally have a nervous breakdown. He handled it. And that’s why everyone has to respect him.”.

The reality of those legal hurdles remains complex. While Tyson suggested Trump was bankrupt during his 2016 run, the real estate mogul’s last bankruptcy filing occurred in 2009. Additionally. while Trump has never faced a criminal conviction for sexual misconduct. a federal jury in May 2023 found him liable for sexually abusing and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll. That verdict eventually led to a total of $88.3 million in penalties—$5 million from the initial trial and $83.3 million in a subsequent judgment.

Their history of mutual support is well-documented. In 1992. when Tyson was convicted of rape in Indiana. Trump publicly advocated for the boxer. telling the New York Post that the victim had already received satisfaction through Tyson’s humiliation. He suggested at the time that the conviction was already punitive and that Tyson should avoid prison by paying the victim millions.

Looking beyond the politics, the boxing legend faces his own turbulence. A planned exhibition match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. is currently on hold after Tyson broke his hand in May. compounded by a lawsuit between Mayweather and promoter CSI Sports. This follows his return to the ring in 2024. where he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Jake Paul in a bout that reached an estimated 60 million households on Netflix.

For Tyson, the lens through which he views Trump is deeply personal. Whether referencing the 2024 assassination attempt in Pennsylvania or the decades of court appearances. he continues to view the man as indomitable. Regardless of the controversy surrounding both their lives. the loyalty remains anchored in the belief that they have both survived battles that would have broken lesser figures.
