Microsoft 365 Family Update Expands AI While Cutting Storage

Microsoft 365 – Microsoft is unlocking Copilot access for Family plan members, but the shift comes with a controversial reduction in individual cloud storage.

When the email landed in inboxes this week, it promised a long-awaited upgrade to the digital tools powering households. Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscribers. who have spent the last year watching only the primary account holder wield the company’s AI-powered Office features. will soon see those capabilities extended.

Starting in the coming months, the Copilot AI assistant and associated usage features will be shared across a plan. This means up to five additional people—everyone already linked to the Family or Premium subscription—can finally access the AI tools alongside standard Office apps and OneDrive storage.

But the expansion of AI comes at a cost to the digital lockers many families have come to rely on. Until now, the structure provided a straightforward 1TB of OneDrive storage for every individual account. That model is being dismantled in favor of a new. pooled 2TB limit to be shared across the entire subscription plan.

Microsoft frames the shift as a move toward greater flexibility. suggesting it benefits households where one user might exceed the 1TB threshold. Yet. for many. the math represents a significant downgrade in total capacity. raising the likelihood that heavy users will soon face prompts to purchase additional storage tiers.

The adjustments arrive one year after the debut of the Microsoft 365 Premium subscription. a $19.99 monthly tier that bundled Copilot Pro benefits with the existing Family plan. With the new policy. the company notes that some users may end up paying more for AI usage. depending on their specific patterns and needs.

Behind the scenes, the company is attempting to soften the transition. A support note indicates that existing subscribers in eligible markets may qualify for transitional bonus storage, and there are plans to provide assistance for families currently relying on high-volume data usage.

The trade-off is clear: by shifting from individual storage allotments to a communal bucket. Microsoft has gained a more efficient way to manage data while simultaneously pushing users toward premium storage upgrades. Households will gain the shared intelligence of Copilot. but they are losing the individual space that once defined the value of the family plan.
