Michael Penix Transformation Propels Falcons to Offensive Dominance
The Atlanta Falcons have undergone a staggering turnaround, moving from league-worst production to the NFL’s top offense since naming Michael Penix the starter.
When Jessie Bates spoke about the Atlanta Falcons being a different team with Michael Penix under center, it sounded like the typical optimism of a locker room in transition. Two weeks later, the numbers make that assessment look like an understatement.
The franchise opened its season with a dismal 0-2 start. but since Penix took the reins in Week 3. the Falcons have surged to a 2-0 record. The statistical divide is stark enough to suggest two entirely different rosters. With Penix leading the offense. the Falcons are averaging 40.0 points per game—a figure that would rank them first in the entire NFL. comfortably clear of the Buffalo Bills. who currently sit at 31.8 points. Before he took over. the team averaged just 8.0 points per game. the lowest mark in the league and significantly worse than the 32nd-ranked Dolphins’ 11.5 points.
This shift isn’t merely a matter of improved scoring; it is rooted in individual efficiency. Among the 42 quarterbacks who have logged at least 15 pass attempts this season. Penix holds a 113.1 passer rating. good for fifth overall. The stark reality of the Falcons’ early struggles is found at the bottom of that same list: Rush ranks 41st with a 42.5 rating. and Jack Strand sits 42nd at 35.1.
The protection has also stabilized significantly. Rush was sacked five times on 39 passes, while Strand took two sacks in just 15 attempts. Conversely. Penix has been sacked only once across 45 attempts. a feat even more impressive considering he played the majority of his second game without starting left tackle Jake Matthews due to injury.
The impact ripples through every skill position. Running back Bijan Robinson has exploded for 339 yards and four touchdowns in the two games with Penix. compared to 155 yards and no scores in the first two weeks. Brian Robinson has mirrored that trajectory. tallying 112 yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries under Penix. up from 82 yards and zero trips to the end zone on 20 carries without him. Drake London has similarly benefitted. moving from six catches for 80 yards in the opening pair of games to 14 receptions for 290 yards since the quarterback change.
The trajectory of the season shifted the moment the ball left Penix’s hand in Week 3. The team that averaged 8.0 points through a difficult September has been replaced by a group operating at a 40.0-point clip. creating a wide gulf between the reality of the season’s start and the promise of its current form.
