Max Miller Escalates Ohio GOP Feud With Sharp Insults

Rep. Max Miller is lashing out at Sen. Jon Husted while facing intense scrutiny over domestic violence allegations and a challenging reelection bid.

Rep. Max Miller stood on the campaign trail in Ohio this week and burned a bridge that many of his colleagues in the Republican Party have been carefully trying to maintain. Faced with persistent questions about his political survival, the embattled congressman bypassed typical campaign rhetoric, choosing instead to label Sen. Jon Husted “as entertaining as a two-by-four” and “as smart as a box of rocks.”.

This personal attack follows a demand from Husted—who is currently locked in a high-stakes Senate battle against incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown—that Miller should step down from Congress. The congressman’s decision to retaliate publicly comes as he fights to defend a district that Donald Trump carried by 11 points in 2024. Despite the party’s historical strength in the region. Miller is currently being challenged by Brian Poindexter. an ironworker and former Brook Park city councilman who has made the allegations against the incumbent the centerpiece of his campaign.

Miller’s political future has been shadowed by accusations detailed in legal filings by his ex-wife, Emily Moreno. The allegations are severe: Moreno, the daughter of Sen. Bernie Moreno. has claimed that Miller held a gun to her head. threw boiling water at her. and was responsible for their daughter suffering a broken collarbone. Miller continues to deny all claims, which are currently under review by the House Ethics Committee. Sen. Bernie Moreno broke his silence on the matter in August. publicly labeling his former son-in-law “a danger to my daughter” and insisting that Miller has no place in Congress.

For weeks. the path forward for the congressman looked increasingly narrow. and even Donald Trump had reportedly warned him that his reelection prospects were bleak. However, the dynamics shifted in September. During a phone call involving Trump and White House officials, the tone turned noticeably optimistic. “It’s much different now. He was very happy with me… He says I’m going to win,” Miller said.

The party’s financial commitment confirms that the GOP leadership is taking no chances. Although early doubts about Miller’s viability were rampant. the Congressional Leadership Fund intervened last month with a $5 million advertising investment to shore up his seat. For now. the congressman is betting that this institutional backing—and the backing of the former president—will outweigh the hostility from his own state’s senior senator and the gravity of the pending ethics investigation.
