Maryland Purple Line Opening Date Remains A Moving Target

Maryland Purple – While Maryland’s 16-mile Purple Line is 92% complete, officials admit the official opening date remains subject to change as safety testing looms.

The question is simple, but for those waiting on the 16-mile, 21-stop light rail line, the answer remains elusive. When exactly will the Purple Line finally carry its first passengers from New Carrollton to Bethesda?

During a meeting with the Montgomery County Council’s Transportation and Environment Committee. the official tasked with overseeing the project offered no guarantees. While the contract holds a firm deadline of December 30. 2027. Ray Biggs of the Maryland Transit Administration acknowledged that the actual opening remains a moving target.

Committee Chair Evan Glass pushed for clarity, asking Biggs if a date often cited by observers—April 2028—might be the more realistic expectation. Biggs demurred, describing the timeline as “dynamic” and heavily dependent on the unpredictable outcomes of upcoming safety testing.

“That can go either way,” Biggs told the committee. “But as we get closer and closer, that date will become more sure and will become more aligned among all the partners.”

The tension between the contractual deadline and the reality of construction rests on the complex web of entities managing the project. including the Maryland Transit Administration. Purple Line Transit Partners. Maryland Transit Solutions. and the Purple Line Transit Operators. With 92% of the construction work now complete. the focus is shifting from physical infrastructure to the logistics of a functioning transit line.

Beyond the timeline, Glass raised concerns about how commuters will pay for the service. Biggs confirmed that the line will accept SmartTrip, CharmPass—the system used for MARC Rail and Baltimore-area transit—and cash. There is also an ongoing push to implement a “Tap and Go” system similar to the one used by WMATA. allowing riders to pay via their mobile phones by the time the line begins service.

While the project nears completion, the surrounding communities are still navigating the transition. Drivers should prepare for upcoming disruptions. including an overnight closure at the intersection of Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street from October 5 through approximately October 15. Meanwhile. the Capital Crescent Trail stands at 74% completion. with the leg between Elm Street and Connecticut Avenue slated to open by spring 2027.

For residents seeking the latest on the project’s fluctuating timeline, Biggs pointed to the official @PurplelineMD social media account as the most reliable source for updates.
