LeBron James made his expectations clear during a recent 76ers practice, confronting Joel Embiid after the star center arrived late to the session.
The message was delivered on the hardwood, with no room for ambiguity. As Joel Embiid walked onto the court for a recent Philadelphia 76ers practice. he found himself met not by a warm welcome. but by a direct confrontation from his new teammate. LeBron James. Embiid had arrived just a few minutes late. and James. known for his relentless standard of preparation. immediately let him hear it.
This friction highlights the evolving culture within the 76ers’ locker room as they integrate a new core during the 2026-27 campaign. The roster now features Tyrese Maxey. VJ Edgecombe. Jaylen Brown. and the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. James. who is entering his 24th year in the league. For James. punctuality is more than a preference; it is a fundamental part of the meticulous workout regimen he maintains to sustain his career.
VJ Edgecombe recently reflected on witnessing this work ethic firsthand. When he walked into the locker room before a session, he found James already there, settled and ready. “He was in there before everybody,” Edgecombe said. “As usual.”
Embiid’s history with punctuality has been a recurring point of contention within the organization. In November 2024. Tyrese Maxey openly criticized Embiid for being late “for everything. ” issuing a challenge for the center to improve his timing for team activities. The dynamic between James and Embiid is now being tested as the team navigates these early habits.
James has been vocal about his intentions since joining the roster. During a September 25 episode of his Mind the Game podcast, he emphasized the philosophy he brings to his new environment: “The only thing that matters is what we preach every day and how we’re gonna hold each other accountable.”
The 76ers have three preseason games remaining to iron out these internal issues. The stakes are high for the team, which is set to open its regular season against the New York Knicks on October 20.
