Leaving Amazon While Pregnant: A Founder’s High-Stakes Bet

After two decades in tech, Sarina Virk Torrendell walked away from a high-six-figure salary at Amazon to launch the AI startup YouPop while five months pregnant.

In September 2025, Sarina Virk Torrendell stood at a professional crossroads that few would choose to navigate. She held a high-six-figure position at Amazon—a role that provided stability for her and her two children in New York City. She had just learned she was five months pregnant with her third child. The rational choice was to stay. but the urgency of a new idea proved louder than the comfort of a corporate paycheck.

She walked away from her career to build YouPop, an AI-powered operating system for content creators. The transition was not met with universal acclaim. Friends and family questioned the timing. and even her husband. her primary supporter. initially urged her to wait until after the baby arrived. For Torrendell, however, the risk of missing the market far outweighed the desire for corporate security.

Her conviction was rooted in a two-decade trajectory through the consumer technology sector. After stints at Apple. where she managed global App Store partner marketing and helped scale Apple Pay. and at Meta. where she supported small businesses during the pandemic. Torrendell spent three years at Amazon focusing on creator partnerships. Through these roles. she identified a growing trend: content creators were no longer just posting videos; they were managing multi-platform businesses involving books. courses. podcasts. and brand deals. The problem, she realized, was that their tools remained fragmented across different platforms.

To bridge this gap, Torrendell gave herself a 90-day window to secure funding. She bypassed the standard rounds of meetings, targeting only about 20 investors who specialized in consumer technology. She succeeded, raising $1 million. The capital allowed her to move with speed. hiring a principal AI engineer and a chief of staff to assemble a team of designers and engineers. They produced a beta version of the software in roughly five and a half months.

The platform functions as an “agentic operating system” that acts as a central hub for a creator’s data. If a user contemplates writing a book. the system analyzes their proprietary cross-platform data to suggest topics and even draft outlines. As of August. the beta is live. and while the company has yet to report revenue. it has secured a waitlist approaching 1. 000 people.

The technical demands of such a tool are significant. requiring the system to synthesize vast amounts of disparate data into actionable insights. Yet. the scope of the mission has expanded in Torrendell’s view; she now sees the market shifting to include not just traditional creators. but professionals with day jobs who are building public expertise.

Torrendell maintains that the path to success requires a delicate balance. She advocates for listening to feedback to refine the product, yet insists on maintaining ironclad conviction in the core opportunity. Her strategy is to avoid reacting to every external funding announcement or rival update. choosing instead to pivot only when the market demands a change. It is a philosophy born from the realization that while others may offer well-meaning opinions. they lack the specific context of the builder.

“It’s very important to trust yourself and have conviction in what you’re building,” Torrendell said. For now, she is betting that the timing, however risky, was exactly right.
