Jury Selection Begins in Trial of Former Stoughton Detective

Jury selection starts Tuesday in the federal trial of Matthew Farwell, a former detective accused of murdering Sandra Birchmore in 2021.

When the doors open at the federal courthouse in Boston this Tuesday. the process to seat a jury will begin for a case that has shadowed a community for more than five years. Former Stoughton police detective Matthew Farwell faces trial for the 2021 death of Sandra Birchmore. a case that transformed from a local ruling of suicide into a federal indictment following an FBI investigation.

Farwell, 40, stands accused of killing Birchmore in her Canton apartment. Prosecutors allege the death occurred after Birchmore, who was pregnant, told the detective that they were going to be parents. The government contends Farwell. who was married with children. murdered her to prevent her from exposing a yearslong abusive relationship that allegedly began when Birchmore was 15 and a participant in the Stoughton Police Explorers Academy. where Farwell served as an instructor.

At the core of the prosecution’s case is the allegation that Farwell groomed Birchmore. committing statutory rape in 2013 when he was 27. The state now asserts he maintained this relationship for years, sometimes meeting during his shifts with the Stoughton police. The prosecution must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Farwell killed Birchmore to prevent her from reporting federal offenses. including the deprivation of her rights. coercion. and wire fraud. The second federal charge alleges he killed her and caused the death of her unborn child.

The defense argues a starkly different narrative: that Birchmore was distraught over the end of their relationship and took her own life. While DNA testing has excluded Farwell as the father of the fetus. the trial is expected to lean heavily on forensic medical evidence. Prosecutors intend to present experts who will testify that the injuries Birchmore sustained are consistent with strangulation rather than self-inflicted harm. The defense plans to counter with their own medical experts.

Thousands of text messages between the pair, which reportedly show the shift in their dynamic in the months leading up to her death, are expected to serve as key evidence. The trial is projected to last about a month, featuring testimony from more than 100 possible witnesses.

Court proceedings will typically run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., though the presiding judge has kept the option open for half-days ending at 1 p.m. Jury selection is expected to span several days, with opening statements likely to wait until at least Friday.
