JJ Redick Expects Mistakes From Cameron Carr & Adou Thiero But Both Will Get Opportunities

The Los Angeles Lakers have a pair extremely talented young wings in rookie Cameron Carr and second-year player Adou Thiero. Both showed excellent promise in Summer League with Thiero looking like a potential defensive force while Carr showed off his outstanding shotmaking ability and both being amazing athletes as well.
The Lakers have a number of wing players battling for rotation spots and minutes and that could lead to a short leash, especially for young guys like Carr and Thiero. Head coach JJ Redick expects the two to make some mistakes, especially Carr, but he still feels both will have plenty of opportunities throughout the season to make an impact.
“I mean everybody is gonna make mistakes. It’s a matter of, does your role allow you to have egregious mistakes, that’s the NBA,” Redick responded when asked what kinds of mistakes he feels would be more acceptable for the young players. “I remember when I was a player, early in my career I’m getting eight minutes if I’m lucky and if I’m not the low man two straight possessions, I’m gonna get two minutes, that’s just how it works. Starters are different. Guys who play heavy minutes are different. That’s the nature of roles in the NBA.
“I’m very confident those guys are gonna have opportunities this year. Cam, we see a player in Cam. We’re really excited about him, You can also see through three days that he’s a rookie. And there were times today where we kind of had to stop a drill or, at one point a minute into the second scrimmage I had to call a timeout and bring him over and just teach him a little bit. But he picks up things quick so I’m very confident that he’ll have opportunities this year.”
Redick was very honest about how the NBA works and it is simply a fact that the stars are gonna be afforded the opportunity to make more mistakes than players on the edge of the rotation. And with the Lakers having so much more depth on the wing, if players like Carr or Thiero are constantly making the same mistakes, they’re gonna be taken out for someone who isn’t.
But that doesn’t mean that they won’t have the opportunity to contribute and grow overall as players. Redick clearly sees a lot in Carr, and has spoken highly of Thiero this offseason as well so if either or both prove to be the best options for this Lakers team, they will get the minutes they’ve earned.
JJ Redick: Cameron Carr will have opportunities to play this season
In fact, Redick has already said as much, noting that even if the opportunities only come here and there, Carr will definitely have his opportunities to be part of the Lakers’ rotation.
