JioHotstar Turns to Strategic Partnerships for Middle East Push
JioHotstar Middle – Reliance-backed JioHotstar is entering the Middle East and North Africa by embedding its content within the Starzplay ecosystem, targeting the region’s massive South Asian diaspora.
When the interface updates for Starzplay subscribers across the Middle East and North Africa this week. the shift will mark a calculated evolution in how Indian content reaches the global diaspora. JioHotstar. the streaming giant backed by Reliance Industries and its 500 million monthly active users. is bypassing the standalone app route it took in the U.K. Canada. and Singapore. Instead, it is anchoring its MENA expansion directly inside Starzplay.
The partnership, announced Tuesday, grants JioHotstar a dedicated section within the Starzplay app and website. For the millions of South Asians living in the region. this means immediate access to a library of Indian films. reality franchises. and original programming available in up to 10 languages—including Hindi. Malayalam. Tamil. Telugu. and Bangla. The rollout specifically prioritizes the Malayali population, reflecting a demographic shift in the streaming service’s content strategy.
Reliance is betting that regional familiarity will outweigh the need for a separate platform. While the service previously debuted in the U.K. Canada. and Singapore as a standalone replacement for Hotstar. the MENA strategy relies on the infrastructure of an existing player. Starzplay. which currently hosts over 2.3 million subscribers and maintains a strong foothold in the region’s cricket-viewing market. provides an immediate pipeline to the audience Reliance is chasing.
Financial details of the deal remain under wraps. but Starzplay CEO Maaz Sheikh framed the integration as a “strategic investment.” The move effectively builds upon previous distribution efforts; Disney Star had already expanded a deal with evision—a major shareholder in Starzplay—in 2024. That earlier agreement made evision the regional home for Hotstar Specials, laying the groundwork for this deeper integration.
For viewers, the transition changes the pricing landscape. A standalone JioHotstar sports offering, common in India, will not be available. Instead. users can bundle JioHotstar with Starzplay’s sports offerings for AED 49.99 (roughly $13.60) a month. or access the service through Starzplay’s Plus monthly plan for AED 34.99 (approximately $9.50). The programming itself will include high-profile titles like “Bigg Boss” and “Koffee with Karan. ” with new originals scheduled to premiere in the region simultaneously with their Indian releases.
This regional play is the latest movement for the entity formed after Reliance and Disney merged their Indian media businesses into an $8.5 billion joint venture in 2024. Since the combined platform—merging JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar—launched in India in February of last year. the company has pivoted rapidly toward global expansion. By tucking its content into the established Starzplay ecosystem. JioHotstar avoids the friction of new user acquisition. opting instead to capture an audience that is already paying for access to the cricket and regional dramas that define their viewing habits.
