Jersey Shore Faces Coastal Flooding and Gusty Winds as Offshore Nor’easter Lingers

A persistent offshore nor’easter continuing to churn off the Atlantic coast is generating hazardous conditions, including rough surf, gusty winds, and multiple rounds of tidal flooding across New Jersey and Delaware waterways. While inland communities throughout the Philadelphia metropolitan area are expected to experience little to no impact from the system, forecasters warn that elevated winds and high waters will maintain dangerous conditions along the immediate shore, bays, and tidal rivers through Wednesday night.

A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect across the entirety of the Jersey Shore, coastal Delaware, and along tidal stretches of the Delaware River. This advisory is scheduled to stay in place through Wednesday evening’s high tide cycle. According to the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, New Jersey, the Wednesday evening high tide represents the primary concern of the weather event, bringing the potential for widespread minor to low-end moderate tidal flooding, particularly within vulnerable back bay communities. Multiple rounds of tidal flooding are anticipated to linger throughout the region through at least Wednesday night.

Alongside the coastal flood threats, northeasterly winds continue to persist across the area, with the strongest wind speeds concentrated directly along the coastline. Coastal regions stretching from Ocean County southward through Cape May in New Jersey, as well as Bethany Beach in Delaware, could experience wind gusts reaching between 35 and 40 mph. Meanwhile, inland locations surrounding Philadelphia and Trenton are projected to see considerably lighter gusts ranging from 20 to 25 mph.

Conditions on the water remain treacherous for mariners and beachgoers alike. The National Weather Service has issued active Gale Warnings and Small Craft Advisories across regional marine zones, where open-water wind gusts are expected to reach between 30 and 45 knots. In response to the rough marine conditions, safety officials are strongly urging anyone traveling near or operating on tidal waters to exercise extreme caution.
