The small plastic fob attached to your keys just became a lot more useful. With the rollout of Google Play services v26.39. part of the broader October System Services updates. Google is bridging the gap between physical items and digital management by bringing NFC support to Find Hub-compatible trackers.
This isn’t just a technical tweak. By tapping an NFC-enabled phone against a tracker, you can now instantly pull up its specific details and configuration settings. If that item happens to be lost. this same interaction provides a clear path for someone else to identify the owner. turning a silent. hidden tag into a functional lifeline for a missing backpack or set of keys.
Setting up those devices is also becoming a more guided experience. During the initial registration. users can now name their trackers. assign them to specific categories. and toggle features like Left-Behind Reminders immediately. This change moves the configuration process from an afterthought to part of the initial onboarding.
Beyond the tracking network, the October update introduces visual clarity to digital payments. Notifications for card tokenization now feature card artwork and payment network logos. allowing users to distinguish between multiple cards at a glance. Additionally. applications that leverage Google Maps features are seeing a minor shift: developers can now surface terms and attribution information through an info icon placed directly beside the Google Maps logo.
The trajectory is clear: Google is moving to make item-tracking a more seamless, less manual process. By prioritizing how a user interacts with a tag—both during setup and in the frantic moments of losing something—the company is attempting to make Find Hub feel like an intuitive extension of the phone itself.
