Google Prepares Gemini to Take Control of Your Gmail

Gemini tasks – Google is developing agentic Gemini features for Gmail, allowing the AI to draft replies and complete tasks with human oversight.
The familiar exhaustion of a cluttered inbox might soon have a digital assistant capable of doing more than just highlighting the messages you’ve ignored. Google is moving toward an “agentic” model for its AI Inbox. potentially granting Gemini the authority to actively manage tasks rather than simply surfacing them.
Evidence surfaced within version 2026.09.28 of the Gmail app suggesting a fundamental shift in how the platform handles communication. Code strings extracted from the update reveal a forthcoming “Start with Gemini” button designed to appear alongside suggested action items. Once triggered, the interface will display an “In progress” subtitle, signaling that the AI is actively navigating the workload.
The integration appears built on a system of constant verification. Gemini will not be a silent operator; it is designed to flag tasks with a “Needs your input” status whenever it reaches a point of uncertainty. A “Give input” button will allow users to supply the specific details required for the AI to move forward. Even when a task is finished, the process does not terminate automatically. Instead. it enters a “Ready for review” stage. ensuring that users can inspect. approve. or deny any AI-generated actions—such as a drafted reply—before anything is finalized or sent.
The leap from merely reading emails to performing actions represents an attempt to solve the chronic issue of email overload. AI Inbox has already served as a filter for users struggling to maintain order. but the addition of agentic capabilities suggests a desire to turn those insights into tangible progress.
The functionality is hidden in the app’s internal architecture. evidenced by strings like “Accomplish this Task” and “Draft Reply.” While these findings indicate a clear path for development. they remain a work-in-progress. As with any feature extracted from early app code. there is no guarantee these tools will reach a public release. or that the final iteration will function exactly as the current code suggests.
