Giannis Antetokounmpo Still Finding Rhythm in New Heat Offense

Giannis Antetokounmpo evaluates his early integration with the Miami Heat, emphasizing that his comfort level is a work in progress as the regular season approaches.

The transition from a 13-season tenure in Milwaukee to a new system in Miami is not something that happens overnight. even for a two-time MVP. After putting up 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting alongside four rebounds and four assists in just 18 minutes during Thursday’s 128-118 win over the New Orleans Pelicans. Giannis Antetokounmpo was clear: he is still learning the ropes.

“I’ve played with the Bucks, what? 900-plus games. I’ve played with the Heat two games,” Antetokounmpo said. “So if you do the math, I think it takes a little bit some time for me to be fully comfortable.”

While his individual stats look impressive, the superstar admits he is still hunting for his offensive spots. The Heat finished last season leading the league in pace—averaging 104.22 possessions per 48 minutes—and adapting to that gear is a priority. Antetokounmpo isn’t rushing the process. noting that both he and his teammates are currently in a cycle of learning one another’s tendencies on the floor.

Head coach Erik Spoelstra has liked the trajectory so far. particularly the way Antetokounmpo has attacked the rim and pushed the transition game. During Thursday’s performance. the forward was consistently one of the first players down the court. often sprinting alongside Davion Mitchell to capitalize on defensive stops and turnovers. “He was more assertive tonight, putting the ball on the floor and getting to the basket,” Spoelstra observed. “We want that, we need that.”.

Bam Adebayo. who started in the frontcourt next to Antetokounmpo. Klay Thompson. Davion Mitchell. and Andrew Wiggins. believes the team is still in the experimental phase. Building a championship-caliber chemistry requires more than a few preseason stints. and Adebayo remains focused on the long-term vision rather than the immediate results.

“We’ve been building this over training camp and into mini camp, so there’s still work to be done,” Adebayo said. “We’re still trying to work through it.”

The potential for the offense is undeniably high. especially for a unit that led the NBA with 12 games of 140 points or more last season. Adebayo hinted at Spoelstra’s high expectations. noting that the coach is pushing the squad to consistently hunt for 80-point halves. As the team prepares for their next preseason test on Saturday against the Minnesota Timberwolves. the focus remains on ramping up minutes and refining the connection between these new pieces before the regular season tips off on October 21.
