Efton Chism’s Breakout Grab Sparks NFL Career Hopes

After a stunning one-handed touchdown grab against the Bills, Efton Chism is drawing praise from Patriots legends and renewed focus from team leadership.
The ball hung in the air, a high-stakes gamble against the Buffalo Bills, until Efton Chism reached out one hand and pulled it down. It was the kind of moment that alters a trajectory, securing a go-ahead touchdown that demanded the attention of a national NFL audience.
For Chism, it was the seventh catch of his professional career and his second touchdown in just 11 games. Having earned a roster spot through a gritty training camp, the receiver moved from a familiar name among summer observers to a player now finding his footing in the league’s spotlight.
Julian Edelman, a former Patriots receiver and Hall of Famer, watched the play and saw more than just a highlight-reel effort. “Chism wasn’t known before Sunday, but it’s a play like that starts someone’s career potentially,” Edelman said on the “Gronk and Jules” Show. “That’s awesome to see.”
Edelman, who himself rose from a seventh-round pick to a 12-year veteran, noted the intensity Chism brought to the field. Rob Gronkowski added that while some have drawn comparisons between the two, Chism is still early in his journey. “He stepped up in a huge way. ” Gronkowski said. noting that Chism entered the game with negative one-yard on the season before finishing with two catches for 42 yards. “That’s how you win games and become a complete team.”.
Patriots coach Mike Vrabel emphasized that the performance was no accident, noting that “nobody works harder” than Chism. As the team evaluates its roster moving forward. the coach confirmed that success on the field serves as its own currency. “Guys continue to take advantage of their opportunities, they get more opportunities,” Vrabel said Monday. “We’ve been finding ways to work him in there previously.”.
Not everyone was impressed by the breakthrough. Buffalo’s CJ Gardner-Johnson dismissed Chism as a “practice squad player,” suggesting the performance would be a one-time occurrence. Edelman’s advice to the young receiver was simple: “Prove them wrong, buddy. Prove them wrong, bubs.”
Whether this victory signals a lasting shift for the Patriots remains a point of internal caution. While the team remains in contention, there is a clear acknowledgment that the work is only beginning. “We’ve got to go a drive without a bobbled snap or some kind of almost interception,” Edelman added. “Winning masks everything, but we have a long way to go. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel, and it ain’t daylight, it’s an [expletive] train. It’s only Week 4.”.
